South Korea’s highly awaited historical drama Harbin, featuring an ensemble cast led by Hyun Bin and Lee Dong Wook, has shared a closer look at its complex characters. A new character poster of Lee Dong Wook as independence fighter Lee Chang Seop has been unveiled, giving audiences a glimpse into the story’s gripping intensity and patriotism.

Lee Dong Wook as Lee Chang Seop: A Freedom Fighter with a Conflict

In the newly released poster, Lee Dong Wook is shown as the determined Lee Chang Seop, a key ally of General Ahn Jung Geun but also a man torn by conflicting ideals about Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule. Set in 1909, during the height of Japan’s colonization of Korea, Harbin portrays the sacrifices and resilience of freedom fighters determined to reclaim their country’s sovereignty.

According to Lee Dong Wook, his character reflects a fierce commitment to independence, often resorting to armed resistance. While Lee Chang Seop shares a deep camaraderie with Ahn Jung Geun, their contrasting methods spark powerful debates throughout the narrative.

Director Woo Min Ho, known for Inside Men and The Drug King, commended Lee Dong Wook’s dedication, saying:

“After watching him transform in Strangers from Hell, I knew he could bring Lee Chang Seop to life. His portrayal in Harbin is rich and multi-layered, adding a striking dimension to the film.”

Ahn Jung Geun’s Mission: Hyun Bin Takes the Lead

The plot revolves around Hyun Bin, who plays General Ahn Jung Geun, a revered figure in Korean history. Ahn spearheaded a daring operation to assassinate Japan’s first Prime Minister, Itō Hirobumi, a figurehead of oppression during Japan’s occupation of Korea. The mission, taking place amidst relentless opposition and danger, highlights the personal and collective sacrifices made in pursuit of freedom.

The film captures Ahn Jung Geun’s risky journey to Russia for resources, planning the assassination, and navigating life-threatening challenges. With each moment fraught with danger, Harbin delivers a poignant exploration of the cost of independence and the resilience of the human spirit.

Release Date and Cast

Directed by Woo Min Ho and written with meticulous attention to historical detail, Harbin boasts a star-studded cast including:

  • Hyun Bin as Ahn Jung Geun
  • Lee Dong Wook as Lee Chang Seop
  • Jo Woo Jin, Jeon Yeo Been, and others in pivotal roles

The film is set for a theatrical release on December 25, 2024, promising an emotionally charged and visually stunning portrayal of a pivotal moment in Korean history.
