Actor Lee Dong Wook recently made a funny appearance on Yoo Jae Suk’s variety show, where he jokingly expressed his disappointment about the box office performance of his latest film, Harbin. His lighthearted “complaint” about the movie not reaching the 5 million viewer mark created a hilarious moment on the show.
Two Years of Promotion, “Not Even Close”
During the episode, titled “The Third Seollal Holidays are Just an Excuse,” Yoo Jae Suk playfully pointed out Lee Dong Wook’s extensive promotion of Harbin over the past two years. He noted how the actor had mentioned the film on every variety show appearance. When Yoo Jae Suk asked if the movie had reached the 5 million viewer milestone, Lee Dong Wook responded with a touch of playful frustration, “We’re not even close yet.”
Harbin, which also stars Hyun Bin, had reached 4 million viewers by January 11th, 19 days after its release. While this is a respectable number, Lee Dong Wook clearly had higher expectations. On the variety show, he revealed the current viewership was at 4.2 million, expressing his disappointment at not reaching the 5 million mark.
A Comedic “Disappointment”
Fellow guest Nam Chang Hee attempted to console Lee Dong Wook, suggesting that the upcoming Seollal (Lunar New Year) holiday could bring more viewers to theaters. However, this did little to ease Lee Dong Wook’s playful frustration. He then directly addressed the audience with a straight face, saying, “Honestly, I’m a little disappointed in you (viewers). I’ve been promoting this movie for the last two years, so why are you not coming to see it?”
This comedic “complaint,” delivered with a deadpan expression, had everyone in laughter. Lee Dong Wook repeated his playful gripe several times, leading Yoo Jae Suk to comment on his masterful portrayal of an “indifferent” character. Lee Dong Wook then quipped, “This isn’t a character. You can just take it as the real me.”
The episode highlighted Lee Dong Wook’s natural comedic timing and his ability to create humorous moments.
