The Invincible team is getting ready for its biggest bad yet. Lee Pace has joined the Prime Video animated series as Thragg, the powerful leader of the Viltrum Empire. The character will make his first appearance in Season 4, which is coming in March 2026. The show’s creators, Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa, recently opened up about why Pace is the right person for this job and how a WWE legend played a part in shaping the character.

Why Robert Kirkman Always Wanted Lee Pace for Thragg

Robert Kirkman has been thinking about Lee Pace for the role of Thragg for many years. The idea came to him long before the animated series even existed. Kirkman first noticed Pace while watching shows like Pushing Daisies and Halt and Catch Fire. He found something special in how Pace uses his voice and carries himself on screen.

“He just has this quiet power that he exudes with his voice that we thought would be absolutely perfect for that character. So the casting process was basically asking if Lee was available.” – Robert Kirkman

When Pace got cast in Foundation on Apple TV+, Kirkman started to worry. He thought that maybe Pace playing another powerful empire leader on a sci-fi show might be too similar. He asked himself if casting Pace as Thragg would still work or if people would see it as the same kind of role.

But those fears went away when Kirkman realized that Thragg and Brother Day (Pace’s character on Foundation) are very different. Thragg brings a calm sense of power that Kirkman describes as “very warm and calm and confident at times when he absolutely shouldnt be.”

The Quiet Power That Makes Thragg So Dangerous

What makes Thragg different from other villains on the show comes down to one thing. He does not need to prove himself. Unlike Conquest (voiced by Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who shows off his strength and gets angry during fights, Thragg stays calm. He knows how powerful he is, so he does not need to scream or act tough.

Simon Racioppa explains this idea in a simple way. He says many actors think that being intense means being loud. But Lee Pace can give you the same level of intensity while speaking at a normal volume. That fits Thragg perfectly because Thragg is at his most powerful when he is withdrawn and watching.

The creators even compared Thragg to a WWE superstar named Jake the Snake Roberts. Back in the 1980s, Roberts became famous for his calm and calculated style in the wrestling ring. He did not need to jump around or yell to scare his opponents. He just stood there with his python snake, and everyone knew he meant business. That is exactly how Thragg operates.

Lee Pace on Playing Another Powerful Leader

Lee Pace is no stranger to playing big characters. He played Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy, Thranduil the Elvenking in The Hobbit movies, and Brother Day in Foundation. When asked about playing yet another powerful ruler, Pace jokes that he just keeps getting typecast.

But Pace sees Thragg as something different from his past roles. While the Cleon clones on Foundation are described as “messy” characters, Thragg starts from a place of complete control and discipline. Then the story slowly takes that apart.

Pace describes Thragg as an extraordinarily powerful person who faces obstacles that bring him to his knees. Viewers get to watch this strong, confident being get broken down over time. That journey is what made Pace excited about taking the role.

The actor also shared that he has done a lot of research for this part. He reads Reddit threads where fans debate why Thragg is so powerful. He watches YouTube videos ranking the character’s best fights. All of that fan engagement goes into how he thinks about the character.

“I do feel like I’m playing the character like I know him now. We’ve recorded enough and I’ve researched him enough, thought about him when I’m going on my runs and been inspired by the comic books, but also the fans’ engagement with the character.” – Lee Pace

What to Expect When Thragg Arrives in Season 4

Invincible Season 4 will start streaming on Prime Video on March 18, 2026. The first three episodes will arrive together on that date, with new episodes following weekly after that. Viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India can all watch the same release schedule on Prime Video.

Thragg is not just another enemy that Mark Grayson (voiced by Steven Yeun) has to fight. In the comics, he is the strongest being in the entire Invincible universe. While Conquest pushed Mark to his limits and nearly killed him, Thragg is on a completely different level. He is the one giving orders to characters like Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), Anissa, and Conquest.

Kirkman mentioned at New York Comic Con that the team tries to make every season better than the last. After the huge fight with Conquest in Season 3, they knew they needed something even bigger for Season 4. That something is Thragg.

The show will also add new scenes that were not in the original comics. Kirkman says there are “a lot of scenes that arent present in the comics involving Thragg.” These new moments will give viewers more information about the character than even comic readers have seen before.

Matthew Rhys from The Americans has also joined the cast for Season 4, though his role remains a secret for now. The main cast including Sandra Oh (Debbie Grayson), Gillian Jacobs (Atom Eve), and Walton Goggins (Cecil Stedman) will all return.

Prime Video has already renewed Invincible for a fifth season, showing their confidence in where the story is heading.
