Lee Sun Kyun, the late actor known for his role in “Parasite,” was at the center of an extortion case that has now seen legal resolution. Two individuals, an entertainment establishment manager identified as A and her accomplice, a former actress B, have been sentenced for extorting 300 million KRW from the actor.
Court Ruling
On December 19, 2024, the Incheon District Court’s 4th Criminal Division handed down sentences to the culprits. A, aged 30, was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison. B received a slightly longer sentence of 4 years and 2 months. The court recognized the significant mental distress inflicted upon Lee Sun Kyun by these actions, particularly noting that he was already under pressure from an investigation into illegal drug use at the time of the extortion.
Judge Hong Eun Sook emphasized the role of their actions in contributing to the actor’s mental suffering, although acknowledging that other factors were also at play in his death, which was ruled as a suicide.
Details of the Crime
The extortion scheme began in September 2023 when A claimed her phone was hacked and used this as leverage to demand money from Lee Sun Kyun. However, subsequent investigations uncovered that B was behind the supposed hack, using a burner SIM card to orchestrate the blackmail. B not only threatened A with exposure for drug use to force her compliance but also directly extorted Lee Sun Kyun by threatening to expose their phone conversations.
A faces additional charges related to drug usage, for which she received a separate 1-year sentence.
Justice for Lee Sun Kyun
This sentencing marks a step towards justice for Lee Sun Kyun, recognizing the severe impact the blackmail had on his life. The court’s decision underscores the gravity of the duo’s actions, which were seen as exacerbating the already challenging circumstances surrounding the actor’s personal life and career.
