Lisa Kudrow, famous for playing Phoebe Buffay on the hit show Friends, recently shared her honest thoughts about today’s sitcoms. She says modern comedies have lost their edge because writers are scared to make people laugh the right way.
Kudrow spoke with Lily Tomlin for Interview Magazine while promoting the return of her show The Comeback. The 62-year-old actor did not hold back when asked about the current state of television comedies. Her main issue? New sitcoms play it too safe.
Why Kudrow Avoids New Multi-Camera Comedies
Kudrow admitted she feels no pull to watch newer sitcoms that film in front of live audiences. She said she simply does not believe what she sees on screen.
“I’m not drawn to new sitcoms that are multi-camera in front of an audience because I’m not buying it. I feel like we’ve been too afraid to make jokes that might make people uncomfortable.” – Lisa Kudrow
The actor pointed to classics like 30 Rock, Seinfeld, and Friends as examples of shows that got it right. She praised them for being genuinely funny and well written. But when asked if sitcoms are dying or changing, she answered clearly.
“I wish they were evolving,” Kudrow said.
She thinks the industry has lost its nerve. Writers and producers now avoid jokes that could upset viewers. For Kudrow, that approach kills what makes comedy work.
What Makes a Good Comedy According to Lisa Kudrow
Kudrow broke down exactly what separates a great joke from a forgettable one. She said the best comedies share one key trait.
“The really good ones, they’re not tame jokes,” she explained. “They’re jokes that are kind of, ‘I can’t believe you just said that.’”
For the Friends star, surprise is the heart of comedy. Viewers should not see punchlines coming from a mile away. The best moments catch people off guard and make them react before they can think.
“Comedy is about surprise. You need things you didn’t see coming,” Kudrow added.
This element of surprise has become rare. Many current shows stick to predictable patterns. They avoid anything that might spark debate or make audiences feel even slightly uneasy. Kudrow believes that caution has made modern sitcoms less memorable.
Setting the Record Straight on Phoebe Buffay
During the same conversation, Kudrow addressed how people saw her Friends character. She said fans constantly called Phoebe a “ditz” during the show’s original run from 1994 to 2004. That label always bothered her.
“At the time, it was like, ‘She’s such a ditz. How is it that you only play ditzes?’” Kudrow recalled.
She never agreed with that reading of Phoebe. The character was quirky and marched to her own beat. But that did not make her stupid.
“Is she a ditz? To me, she wasn’t,” Kudrow said. “Someone who wasn’t toeing the line… But she wasn’t stupid.”
Phoebe Buffay remains one of television’s most beloved characters. Kudrow won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1998 for her performance. The show itself ran for ten seasons and continues to find new audiences through streaming.

What Kudrow Is Working on Now
Lisa Kudrow currently appears in the third and final season of The Comeback on HBO. The show premiered last month. Her character, Valerie, takes the lead role in a new sitcom secretly written by an AI program. The storyline fits well with current talks about artificial intelligence in Hollywood.
The Friends star has always taken interesting career paths. After the mega-hit sitcom ended, she created The Comeback, a show that made fun of fame in a very honest way. She also worked on Web Therapy, an improv-heavy series, and appeared in movies like Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.
Her latest comments have started conversations among comedy fans. Many agree that streaming platforms have changed how shows get made. Shorter seasons, global audiences, and the fear of online backlash may have pushed writers toward safer material.
Kudrow’s message is simple. Comedy needs risk. Without surprise and the occasional shocking moment, sitcoms become background noise rather than must-watch television.
