Netflix made a surprising move for Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s new adult animated series Long Story Short. The streaming service ordered a second season before the first season even premiered on August 22, 2025. This kind of early renewal is rare in the entertainment business, showing that Netflix has strong faith in the BoJack Horseman creator’s latest project.

The show follows the Schwooper siblings through different time periods. It jumps from childhood to adulthood and back again, covering family life, personal wins, losses, and the everyday compromises people make. The series features a voice cast that includes Lisa Edelstein, Paul Reiser, Ben Feldman, Abbi Jacobson, Max Greenfield, Angelique Cabral, and Nicole Byer, with Dave Franco and Michaela Dietz in guest roles.

Creator Bob-Waksberg Jokes About the Unexpected Renewal

Raphael Bob-Waksberg responded to the news with his typical dry humor. He said,

“Wow!! A season two?! And season one hasn’t even come out yet! It must be a REALLY good show. I can’t wait to watch it when it premieres on Netflix, Friday, August 22! Let’s all do that!”

The creator, who changed adult animation with BoJack Horseman back in 2014, seems genuinely surprised by Netflix’s quick decision. The streaming platform did not wait for viewer numbers or critical reactions before giving the green light for more episodes.

What Long Story Short Is All About

Long Story Short centers on a Jewish American family and their shared history. The show looks at inside jokes between family members, old wounds that never fully heal, and the complicated love that keeps families connected across decades.

Bob-Waksberg told Variety at the show’s Hollywood premiere that the series focuses on “Jewish joy.” He added, “I think a lot of Jews will enjoy having a place for the Jews, and I think a lot of antisemites might learn a thing or two.” The show draws inspiration from his own family experiences.

Lisa Edelstein, who voices mother Naomi Schwartz, said she put parts of her own mother into the character. She explained, “It’s all about the complications and love of a family. It is very culturally specific, but I think also it’s universal.”

The first episode centers on a Bar Mitzvah, the ceremony marking a 13-year-old’s move into adulthood. Max Greenfield, who voices son Yoshi Schwooper, shared his own Bar Mitzvah memories. He recalled having an “SNL”-themed party with tables named after David Spade, Jon Lovitz, Victoria Jackson, and Ellen Cleghorne, calling it “one of the best moments of my life.”

Netflix’s Confidence in the Creative Team

Netflix’s decision to renew Long Story Short before its debut shows the platform’s trust in Bob-Waksberg’s work. The creator previously made BoJack Horseman, which ran for six seasons and became Netflix’s first original animated series. That show earned praise for mixing dark comedy with serious looks at depression, addiction, and personal responsibility.

The same team worked on Long Story Short. Lisa Hanawalt, who did production design for BoJack Horseman, serves as supervising producer. Noel Bright and Steven A. Cohen executive produce through Tornante Television. ShadowMachine, the studio behind BoJack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, handles animation.

Ben Feldman, who voices son Avi Schwooper, talked about the show’s approach to sensitive topics. He said, “People are going to want to talk about the greater global geopolitical issues that are happening around this show, but this show is not about that.”

Release and Streaming Information

Long Story Short Season 1 premiered on Netflix on August 22, 2025. The first season has 10 episodes, each running 30 minutes. The show is available for streaming in all regions where Netflix operates, including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and worldwide.

Season 2 does not have a confirmed release date yet. Netflix announced the renewal on July 31, 2025, but production timelines for animated shows typically take time. The show will return to Netflix for its second season, with more episodes following the Schwooper family’s story across different life stages.

Edelstein shared that the show has emotional moments. She said, “There are a few tears shed, believe it or not, later on in the season.”
