The anime adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi’s manga MAO made its debut on April 4, 2026. This new series brings together supernatural horror, time travel, and a dark mystery that connects two people from completely different eras. The first episode sets up a story that feels both fresh and familiar for people who grew up watching Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2.
Sunrise (the studio behind Inuyasha) produces the show. It introduces Nanoka Kiba, a middle school girl with a tragic past, and Mao, a 900-year-old exorcist living in the Taisho era. Their first meeting changes everything for both of them.
A Normal Girl Walks Into Another World
Nanoka Kiba is a third-year middle school student in the Reiwa era. She survived a road cave-in eight years ago that killed her parents. Since that accident, she has been weak and sickly, forcing her grandfather and housekeeper to make her drink green smoothies for her health.
One day, Nanoka visits the Gogyo Shopping District with her friends. This location is the same spot where her parents died. While exploring, she hears strange noises and walks through a gate. Suddenly, she finds herself in an open-air street straight out of historical Japan.
The people there wear a mix of traditional kimono and Western clothes. Most of them are transparent and seem unable to see her. Before Nanoka can understand what is happening, a mantis monster attacks her. The creature tears off her hand, and she screams for help.
Mao’s Entrance and a Shocking Discovery
A young man with black and white hair named Mao watches the attack. At first, he refuses to help, telling Nanoka she can handle it herself. But when her blood touches the monster and starts dissolving it, Mao steps in and kills the creature with one swing of his sword.
Mao sews Nanoka’s hand back on and gives her a strange pill. When she wakes up, she demands to know why he did not help earlier. He calmly tells her, “You… you are an ayakashi, aren’t you?”
An ayakashi means a demon or ghost. Nanoka gets angry at this insult and runs back through the gate to her own time. But when she gets home, she notices her wound has completely healed overnight.
Nanoka’s Powers Show Up Without Warning
The very next day, Nanoka discovers something is different about her body. While running to school, she suddenly moves faster than any human should. She passes students on bicycles like they are standing still. Then a truck nearly hits her, and she jumps so high that she lands on the roof of a multi-story building.
When she looks at her reflection, her pupils have changed into a cat’s vertical shape. Her teeth have become sharp and pointed. The curse that Mao talked about has started waking up inside her.
Mao later explains that he gave her an antidote while healing her hand. He noticed that something was blocking her power and decided to remove that seal.
What Connects Nanoka and Mao
Mao lives in the Taisho era (1920s Japan). He has walked the earth for 900 years because of a curse placed on him by a powerful cat demon named Byoki. The same curse affects his sword. If anyone other than Mao tries to use the blade, they will die.
Nanoka soon learns that she carries the exact same curse. Her blood has special properties that can hurt demons. When she travels back to the past again, she joins Mao in his search for answers. Together, they want to figure out why they share this curse and how to break it.
The first episode also shows that Nanoka can move between the present and the Taisho era by passing through the gate at the shopping district. This ability becomes her way to help Mao solve the mystery of Byoki and the string of murders happening in the past.
The Production and Creative Team
MAO comes from the manga creator Rumiko Takahashi, who is responsible for Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, and Urusei Yatsura. The manga started in 2019 and has over 300 chapters so far. Many fans have waited years for this anime adaptation.
Sunrise handles the animation. The studio previously worked on the original Inuyasha anime and its sequel Yashahime. This time, the team uses a color palette similar to the newer Urusei Yatsura remake.
The show airs on NHK in Japan at 11:45 PM JST every Saturday. Each episode runs for about 24 minutes.
Global Streaming and Release Details
MAO Episode 1 premiered on April 4, 2026. For viewers outside Japan, the episode becomes available on various international streaming platforms. The exact services vary by region, but fans in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia can watch the show through major anime streaming providers.
The first season will run for two consecutive cours, meaning around 24 to 26 episodes total. This gives the story enough time to cover the early volumes of the manga without rushing through important plot points.
Fan Reactions to the First Episode
Early reactions from viewers have been mostly positive. Many long-time Rumiko Takahashi fans see MAO as the true spiritual follow-up to Inuyasha. The dark atmosphere, the monster designs, and the mystery surrounding the curse all remind viewers of the earlier hit series.
One fan on MyAnimeList wrote:
“The faithful meeting between Mao and Nanoka. Just from this first episode, there’s some character chemistry between them, almost like they are fated to meet. Mao is definitely an interesting character considering where he came from and origins.”
Another viewer compared the show to Takahashi’s earlier work:
“Unlike Ranma which is straight-up comedy, this one feels more serious. It’s basically her own Inuyasha all over again. Traveling to the past, youkai, demons, it’s the same setup.”
Some fans worry that the anime will not adapt the later chapters where the story becomes much more complex. The manga really finds its footing around Volume 13, and with only 24 episodes, the anime might not reach that point.
Others appreciate that MAO mostly avoids the comedy gags found in Takahashi’s other series. One reviewer described it as:
“Along with Mermaid Saga, it’s Takahashi’s most mature work. Unlike her other works, where the gags are sometimes fired off every second, MAO manages almost entirely without gags. It’s simply this dark, sometimes almost Kafkaesque atmosphere.”
Key Characters Introduced in Episode 1
Nanoka Kiba is the main character from the modern era. She died once as a child during the accident that killed her parents but somehow came back to life. Her blood can hurt demons, and she now carries a curse that gives her cat-like eyes and fangs when her power awakens.
Mao is the title character. He is an onmyoji (exorcist) who stopped aging at 17 or 18 years old due to the curse from Byoki. He has lived for over 900 years and wanders Japan searching for the demon that cursed him. He carries a sword that will kill anyone else who tries to use it.

Otoya is a young boy who travels with Mao. He carries supplies and helps with the exorcism work. Not much is known about his background yet.
Byoki is the cat demon that cursed both Mao and Nanoka. The creature appears in the opening scene of the episode, shown as a feral monster with seven tails emerging from flames. Finding and defeating Byoki is the main goal of the series.
What Makes MAO Different From Inuyasha
While many fans compare MAO to Inuyasha, there are clear differences. Inuyasha focused on collecting the Shikon Jewel shards, with a clear goal from the start. MAO builds a larger mystery where every answer leads to more questions.
The manga’s writer seems to have planned the whole story from the beginning. Details introduced early connect to events hundreds of chapters later. This makes the story feel more like a complete work rather than an ongoing adventure.
Another difference is the tone. Inuyasha mixed action with comedy and romance. MAO stays dark and serious most of the time. The monster designs are more gruesome, and the stakes feel higher because the curse affects both leads in deeply personal ways.
