The second episode of MAO has arrived, and it is already pulling viewers deeper into its world of ancient curses and Taisho era mysteries. The new anime from legendary creator Rumiko Takahashi (Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2) continues to build its dark fantasy setting, moving past introductions to throw its main duo into a life-or-death situation against a terrifying spider demon.

Episode 2, which aired on Saturday, April 11, focuses on Nanoka Kiba trying to understand her strange connection to the past while Mao investigates a series of beheadings. The episode mixes spooky horror elements with the classic character banter that fans of Takahashi’s work love.

A Deadly Mystery in the Taisho Era

The story picks up with Nanoka realizing that the strange world she fell into is the Taisho era (specifically the year 1923). She remembers seeing a monster during a traumatic accident she survived in the first grade, confirming that her connection to this world is not random. Meanwhile, Mao is busy looking into beheading incidents that he believes are linked to Byoki, the cat demon who cursed him 900 years ago.

The investigation leads the pair to a viscount’s mansion. At first, the viscount seems like the obvious villain due to his strange behavior. But the show throws a twist when it is revealed that the real threat is the viscount’s wife: a Spider Woman yokai. This creature has been using the men’s heads as nests for her eggs, which is a classic, disturbing horror setup.

Nanoka Shows Her Strength

While the mystery is engaging, the highlight of MAO Episode 2 is the action sequence and how Nanoka handles herself. During the fight with the Spider Woman, Mao gets trapped in the yokai’s powerful webs. Just when things look bad, Nanoka grabs Mao’s cursed sword, Hagunsei.

According to the rules of the show, nobody except Mao is supposed to be able to touch this blade without dying. However, Nanoka not only holds it but uses it to cut the webs and save Mao.

“You’re like me.” – Mao

After the fight, Mao tells Nanoka that the fact she can wield the sword means she is like him. This is a major moment in the episode because it confirms that Nanoka is not just a normal girl who slipped through time. She carries the same curse (or a similar one) as the 900-year-old exorcist, linking their fates together.

Animation and Viewer Reactions

Viewers online have noted the improvement in the show’s pacing and visuals for the second episode. On forums, fans pointed out that the animation quality felt stronger than the first episode, specifically highlighting the fluid movements during the sword fight.

One viewer joked about the surprise of seeing a yokai pull out a gun during the fight, saying, “The spider lady using a gun gave me chills.” Another user commented on the gore level, stating, “Wouldn’t be a Takahashi story without some bug demon going on. That spider was disgusting, but the animation was great.”

Critics also noted that the episode successfully establishes the reluctant ally dynamic between Mao and Nanoka. She is not just a damsel in distress. She actively saves Mao and pushes him for answers, making their partnership feel more balanced.

Streaming Details and Global Release

For viewers in the United States, new episodes of MAO stream every Saturday on Hulu.

For audiences in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, the series is available on Disney+.

In India and other global regions, the series is also available on Disney+ under the Star banner.

The show is scheduled to run for 26 episodes across two consecutive cours (seasons), meaning viewers will get a full year of content without long breaks.
