Mario Lopez teamed up with Drew and Jonathan Scott, the Property Brothers, for a special home renovation to help a childhood friend. The episode, part of Celebrity IOU season 11, shows the group transforming a family’s kitchen and homeschool area. It aired on January 11, 2026, at 9:00 PM on HGTV.

Lopez wanted to surprise his longtime friend Rod, who he calls Tuddy, and Rod’s family. The family had gone through a difficult period after Rod’s wife, Tiffanie, needed emergency spine surgery. With three children being homeschooled in a multi-purpose living space, the home needed a functional update.

The Heart Of The Renovation Project

The main goal was to fix two key areas in Tuddy’s home: the kitchen and the first-floor living room used for homeschooling. The kitchen was described as needing an upgrade, with only a small two-seat breakfast bar for dining. The adjacent living room had to work as a classroom, dining area, and family lounge, leading to problems with clutter and a lack of storage.

Lopez explained his deep connection to Tuddy, saying, “Tuddy and I have been boys for a long time, since we were kids…..Tuddy definitely knows me and understands me probably better than most people.” He also shared that Tuddy has been his makeup artist, and they have worked together for nearly twenty years. This project was Lopez’s way of giving back during a hard time for his friend’s family.

Mario Lopez Tests His Home Improvement Skills

While known for his hosting and acting roles, Lopez stepped into the renovation with enthusiasm, though he was new to large-scale home improvement. Drew Scott joked about testing Lopez’s famous physique, challenging him to hold a heavy hammer straight-armed. After swapping for a lighter hammer, Drew admitted, “You know, I can just go for lunch right now. Grab some coffee. Are you getting nervous? Are you sweating? Oh! God, he is strong as I thought he was.”

Jonathan Scott took on the role of teaching Lopez some painting techniques for the kitchen cabinet doors. When asked about his painting skills, Lopez humorously compared them to his coloring, replying, “Well, if it’s as good as my coloring, then it’s gonna be fantastic. I haven’t done much, to be quite honest.” He was impressed with the modern tools, asking Jonathan, “So impressed by the modern gadgetry and what happened to the old school wax-on, wax-off kind of thing?”

Jonathan emphasized the importance of a professional finish, advising, “Never never roller paint. If you are doing cabinet doors because you want that beautiful satin door finish…But I always spray, like, look how beautiful and flat that is. That’s what we want.” Lopez liked the chosen colors, confident the family would too.

Transforming The Kitchen And Schoolroom

The renovation tackled the home’s core issues. In the kitchen, the team removed a soffit to raise the ceiling height, creating a feeling of more space. They installed new two-tone cabinets and a porcelain countertop for a timeless yet functional look. The new layout provided much-needed storage and a better cooking environment.

The multi-purpose living room received the most dramatic change. The team built floor-to-ceiling cabinets and drawers along the walls, creating organized storage for school supplies, toys, and family items. This cleared the clutter that had defined the room. They added a built-in banquette for dining and a cozy corner nook where the children could read or do schoolwork.

The result was a space that could easily shift from a classroom during the day to a comfortable living and dining area for the family in the evening. Drew Scott summarized the collaborative effort, saying, “We’re taking a main common area and turning it into a living space plus a school space for the kids because they are homeschooled and did the kitchen. At the end of the day, he got in there and no matter what we asked him to do or try, he got in there to do it.”

The Emotional Reveal To The Family

The episode built toward the surprise reveal for Tuddy and his wife, Tiffanie. Having kept the entire renovation a secret, Lopez and the Scott brothers welcomed the family back to their transformed home. The show captures their emotional reaction to seeing their new kitchen and versatile living space for the first time.

For Lopez, the project was a meaningful way to support his friend. He expressed his gratitude to Drew and Jonathan, stating, “I’m really grateful that you guys helped me out with my boy, Tuddy.” The renovation directly addressed the practical challenges the family faced, providing them with a more functional and uplifting home environment after a period of stress and recovery.

This episode of Celebrity IOU is available for streaming on the HGTV platform and other on-demand services. It highlights the show’s core theme of celebrities giving back to the important people in their lives through the gift of a home transformation.
