SEVENTEEN Did Not Build HYBE: Fans Upset Over Edited Clip On MBC’s “Hangout With You”
In a recent episode of MBC’s variety show “Hangout With You,” a clip featuring SEVENTEEN went viral for all the wrong reasons. The clip, which included subtitles stating that “the HYBE headquarters were built up by SEVENTEEN,” sparked outrage amongst BTS fans, also known as ARMY.
ARMYs Furious Over “Inaccurate” Subtitles
The subtitle implying that SEVENTEEN was solely responsible for HYBE’s success completely downplayed the massive contributions of BTS. Fans felt it was a blatant disregard for BTS’s undeniable role in propelling the company to its current heights. The outrage quickly spread like wildfire on social media, with many ARMYs calling it an “absolute distortion of history.”

MBC Makes Edits, But Fans Remain Unconvinced
Following the online uproar, MBC seemingly acknowledged the mistake and edited the subtitles. The revised version now reads, “Welcome to HYBE’s headquarters. Even the members were in awe of the new building.” However, the damage appeared to be done. Many fans expressed that the edits weren’t enough, and they couldn’t forget how MBC portrayed the situation.
The edits extended beyond the show’s broadcast. MBC also updated the subtitles on Naver and Nate TV platforms, reflecting the changes.
Numbers Don’t Lie: BTS’s Revenue Contribution to HYBE
Fans weren’t just relying on emotions. They pointed to hard data to back their claims. Revenue figures showed that BTS was responsible for a significant portion of HYBE’s sales. In fact, their contribution reached a staggering 98% (practically 100%) in both 2.018 and 2.019. Even after a slight dip, BTS maintained a substantial contribution, accounting for around 60% of the company’s sales in 2023, despite not being active as a complete group throughout the year. These figures paint a clear picture of BTS’s immense impact on HYBE’s financial success.

The Issue Persists: Unedited Subtitles on MBC Website
While MBC has seemingly made efforts to rectify the situation on most platforms, it appears the edits haven’t reached the official MBC website yet. The website reportedly still displays the original, unedited subtitles that credit SEVENTEEN for building HYBE. This inconsistency has further fueled fans’ disappointment with MBC.
