Chief of War is the new historical drama series on Apple TV+ that tells the story of Hawaii’s unification in the 18th century. The show features a star-studded cast led by Jason Momoa, who also co-created the series. Here’s a complete breakdown of the actors and their roles.
Jason Momoa As Kaʻiana
Jason Momoa plays Kaʻiana, a legendary warrior chief from Kauaʻi. Kaʻiana is a key figure in the battles between Hawaii’s kingdoms. Momoa is best known for his roles as Aquaman in the DC films and Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones.
“This is my life and my culture,” Momoa said about the series. “I needed to wait until my career was in the right moment to tell this story.”
The role is personal for Momoa, who has worked on this project for over a decade.
Luciane Buchanan As Kaʻahumanu
Luciane Buchanan plays Kaʻahumanu, a powerful figure who becomes a key advisor in the unification of Hawaii. Buchanan is known for her lead role in Netflix’s The Night Agent.
“I still pinch myself… This is too good to be true—to play a queen, and to do it on such a big scale,” she said in an interview.
Her character is based on a real historical figure who played a major role in Hawaiian politics.
Temuera Morrison As King Kahekili
Temuera Morrison takes on the role of King Kahekili, a fierce ruler of Maui. Morrison is famous for playing Boba Fett in Star Wars and the voice of Chief Tui in Moana.
King Kahekili is a central antagonist in the series, fighting to maintain his power as Hawaii moves toward unification.
Kaina Makua As Kamehameha I
Kaina Makua makes his acting debut as Kamehameha I, the leader who eventually unites Hawaii. Before this role, Makua was a taro farmer with no acting experience.
“We found Kaina Makua, who plays Kamehameha. He is a taro farmer. That’s his job. He teaches it,” Momoa explained.
The casting was a surprise, but Makua’s deep understanding of Hawaiian culture made him perfect for the role.
Cliff Curtis As Keōua
Cliff Curtis plays Keōua, a nobleman and father of Kamehameha I. Curtis is known for his roles in Avatar: The Way of Water and Fear the Walking Dead.
His character is a major figure in Hawaiian history, adding depth to the political struggles in the series.

Behind The Scenes Of Chief Of War
The series was filmed in New Zealand, with some scenes shot in Hawaii’s lava fields. The production used real traditional Hawaiian canoes and weapons for authenticity.
