The Fox crime drama Memory of a Killer delivered one of its biggest twists yet in Episode 8, solving a mystery that fans thought would wait until the season finale. The episode, titled “Tailored by Fabroni,” aired on March 23, 2026, and it finally revealed the identity of the mysterious Ferryman—the person who hired the hitman to kill Angelo’s daughter, Maria, in the series premiere. But the episode did not stop there, as Detective Dave Woods also made a critical discovery about Angelo’s past.
The Ferryman’s Identity Is Finally Exposed
For weeks, viewers watched Angelo Doyle (Patrick Dempsey) search for the person known only as the Ferryman, the puppet master behind the attack on his family. Many expected this reveal to be saved for the Season 1 finale, but Episode 8 confirmed that FBI Agent Linda Grant (Gina Torres) is the Ferryman.
The connection between Grant and Angelo runs deeper than a simple investigation. The episode revealed that Grant’s son, Dr. Robert Parks, was one of Angelo’s past victims. A flashback showed Grant at her son’s wake, sitting with her granddaughter in the child’s bedroom. The girl held a doll—her father’s favorite, named the Ferryman. Holding that doll, Grant made a promise to bring the man who took her father to justice.
Grant’s personal mission explains why she has been so relentless in her pursuit of Angelo throughout the season. Her grief turned into a calculated plan to destroy him from the inside.
Detective Woods Knows the Truth About Angelo
While Grant’s secret came to light, Detective Dave Woods (Peter Gadiot) finally got the confirmation he had been looking for regarding the Bloch murder. Woods’ investigation into a button found at the crime scene led him to a tailor shop called Fabroni. By pretending to be Angelo’s friend, Woods learned that Angelo goes by the last name Doyle and confirmed that his jacket was missing a button—matching the evidence from Bloch’s murder.
Woods later confronted Angelo at his home, where Angelo was prepared with a gun. Instead of making an arrest, Woods told Angelo that he knew who killed Bloch but would not turn him in. He justified this decision by suggesting that Bloch deserved what happened because he targeted Angelo’s daughter. However, Woods left Angelo with a warning about Agent Grant, describing her as someone who does not give up.
The scene ended with both men understanding exactly where they stand. Woods knows Angelo is a killer, and Angelo knows that Woods is choosing to look the other way—for now.
Joe Struggles With His Role
Joe (Richard Harmon), Angelo’s young protégé, continued to show cracks in his commitment to the hitman lifestyle. Angelo sent Joe to handle a job while he went to investigate the Ferryman’s trap in New Jersey. But Joe could not go through with the killing and had to call Angelo for help.
At the supposed trap location, Angelo discovered the home of Dr. Parks’ widow, Julia Parks, who was hosting a bereavement support group. Angelo sat in on the meeting, using a fake name and sharing real emotions about the loss of his wife. After the meeting, he spoke with Julia, who mentioned the name Gilchrist—the lawyer helping her family. This name connects back to the ongoing investigation into the Ferryman’s network.

What Episode 8 Means for the Final Episodes
The reveal of Grant as the Ferryman changes the power dynamic for the remaining episodes. Angelo now knows who has been targeting his family, but Grant does not yet know that her identity has been exposed. This gives Angelo a temporary advantage, though his worsening memory issues could complicate his next moves.
The conversation between Woods and Angelo also sets up potential conflict. Woods has let Angelo go for now, but his decision may not sit well with other law enforcement officers working the case. Meanwhile, Grant’s personal connection to one of Angelo’s victims adds emotional weight to the final confrontation that is likely coming in the season finale.
The show’s cast also includes Michael Imperioli as Dutch, Angelo’s longtime partner, and Odeya Rush as Maria, Angelo’s daughter. Their roles in the final episodes could determine how Angelo’s double life ultimately affects his family.
