The popular world of the Extraction movies is getting bigger. Netflix has given fans their first look at Mercenary: An Extraction Series, a new show set in the same action-packed universe. The image shows Omar Sy in military gear, ready for a dangerous mission. The series is currently being filmed, with production moving from Ireland to Morocco.
Glen Mazzara, the show’s creator and lead writer, shared his excitement about the project. He called it the biggest show he has ever worked on.

โIt required an incredible amount of prep time. It was overwhelming to finally step on set and see the work of hundreds of people come together to bring this story to life,โ Mazzara said.
He also praised Omar Sy’s performance, saying, โOmarโs humanity and charm bring a warmth to a character trapped in impossible situationsโฆ He is, without a doubt, the beating heart of our show.โ
What is the new Extraction series about?
The story follows a mercenary, played by Omar Sy. He is hired for a dangerous job to rescue hostages in Libya. Once there, he gets trapped between violent groups and deadly killers. The show will follow him as he makes tough choices to survive, all while dealing with his own painful past.
Unlike the main Extraction films that focus on Chris Hemsworth’s character Tyler Rake, this series introduces a new story and a new hero. However, it exists in the same world where skilled soldiers-for-hire take on impossible jobs. The series plans to explore serious themes like trauma, betrayal, and the difficult choices people make when pushed to their limits.
Who is starring in the cast?
Omar Sy leads a large and skilled cast. He is best known globally for his charming role in the hit series Lupin. He is joined by several well-known actors:
- Boyd Holbrook, known for Narcos and The Sandman.
- Natalie Dormer, famous for playing Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones.
- Waleed Zuaiter and Ed Speleers are also in major roles.
The supporting cast includes Sacha Dhawan, Ross McCall, Pip Torrens, Sam Woolf, and Emma Appleton, among others. The characters these actors will play are still a secret, adding to the mystery of the show.
Who is making the show?
The series is being made by a top team with experience in big action stories. Glen Mazzara, who has worked on shows like The Shield and The Walking Dead, is the showrunner. He is overseeing the entire production and wrote the series.
The directing duties are split between two people. Louise Hooper, who directed episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, will direct four episodes. Tim Southam, known for his work on Foundation, will direct the other four. Both directors are also helping to produce the episodes they work on.
The show is being produced by AGBO, the company founded by directors Anthony and Joe Russo. This is the same company that made the Extraction movies and major films like Avengers: Endgame. Sam Hargrave, who directed the two Extraction films, is also involved as an executive producer.
Where and when is it filming?
Filming for the eight-episode series is underway across different countries. The production team recently finished shooting its scenes in Ireland. The crew and cast have now moved to Morocco, which will stand in for the story’s Libyan setting. This global filming approach matches the international feel of the Extraction movies.
Netflix has not yet announced a release date for the series. With filming still happening, a release is likely sometime in the future. Fans will have to wait for more news on when they can watch it.

How does it connect to the Extraction movies?
This series is a key part of Netflix’s plan to grow the Extraction franchise into a larger universe, similar to popular series of movies. While Chris Hemsworth is expected to return as Tyler Rake for a third main film, Mercenary is the first step in telling new stories with new characters in that same world.
There is another expansion already announced. Netflix is also making a movie called TYGO, which will be set in South Korea. That film will star Don Lee (from Train to Busan) and Lee Jin-uk (from Squid Game), and will feature Lalisa โLisaโ Manobal of BLACKPINK. This shows Netflix wants to create action stories in different countries within the same franchise.
Angela Russo-Otstot from AGBO explained the company’s goal for the growing universe.
โWe were inspired to tell more stories in this global franchise, further exploring heroic yet flawed mercenaries who illuminate universal themes,โ she said.
The first look has generated positive reactions from fans online who enjoy the films. Many are excited to see Omar Sy, a beloved actor, take the lead in a major action series.
