The upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, will not hit theaters until at least April 2026. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed the delay during the studio’s earnings call. The film was originally set for release in April 2025 before being pushed to October 2025. Now, it faces another major postponement.

Reshoots were needed after legal issues arose over a past settlement involving one of Jacksonโ€™s accusers. The filmโ€™s script included details about Jordan Chandler, who accused Jackson of abuse in 1993. However, a clause in their settlement barred the Chandler family from being depicted in any movie about Jackson. This oversight forced major changes.

Lionsgate is also considering splitting the biopic into two parts. The studio has over three and a half hours of footage, making a single film difficult. “We will be announcing a definitive release strategy and timing in the next few weeks,” Feltheimer said. The delay will push the film into Lionsgateโ€™s 2027 fiscal year.

The biopic stars Jacksonโ€™s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, as the King of Pop. Other cast members include Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, and Miles Teller as Jacksonโ€™s lawyer, John Branca. Antoine Fuqua directs, with Graham King producing.

Production wrapped in May 2024, but reshoots began in March 2025. A source close to the project denied reports of chaos, saying, “The Michael Jackson biopic is not in total chaos. The inflammatory headlines about the movie halting are simply not true. The film is moving forward.”

The filmโ€™s budget is estimated at $155 million. The Jackson estate is reportedly covering the costs of reshoots. The biopic aims to cover Jacksonโ€™s career highs and personal struggles, including his legal battles.

Lionsgate showcased Michael at CinemaCon in 2024 but did not reveal footage this year. The studio plans to finalize release details soon. Fans will have to wait longer to see Jaafar Jacksonโ€™s portrayal of his legendary uncle.
