In this episode, Eliza is pulled into a high-stakes deception while navigating the new challenges of her relationship with Inspector Alexander Blake. The job reunites Moses with accountant Clarence, reigniting their friendly rivalry as they compete to manage the diamond’s security and sale. What starts as a simple security detail unravels into a complex plot with multiple fake gems and deadly consequences.
Episode 3 Recap: A Diamond Deception Unravels
The episode, titled “The Delivery,” begins with Eliza returning from a trip to the seaside. She finds Moses waiting for her in her dark house. He has returned from Paris, where he had been working and later starting his own agency after helping Patrick Nash. Moses explains he is in trouble and needs Eliza to vouch for Inspector Alexander Blake’s trustworthiness before the inspector arrives.
Moses reveals the job: Patrick Nash, now running a diamond mine in Venezuela, found a massive uncut stone estimated at nearly 100 carats. Nash wants to sell it in London but cannot come himself due to his legal troubles. His business partner, a woman named Florence Dodds, is bringing the diamond by ship. Moses is hired for security, while the accountant Clarence is tasked with negotiating the sale. The two men immediately begin clashing over who is in charge.
They meet the loud and seemingly scattered Florence Dodds at a pub. She explains her late husband owned the mine and she is still in mourning. She casually mentions she left the diamond in her waiting cab outside, causing panic. They retrieve it and take her to Clarence’s rooms for safety. Moses takes the diamond to Eliza’s office to guard it overnight.
The plan falls apart quickly. Moses is woken by a break-in at the office door. He cuts his hand on broken glass and sees a boy run to a tall man with an eyepatch across the street. He then realizes it was a distraction and rushes back upstairs to find the diamond stolen through a hole in the wall. He goes to Clarence’s rooms to find them ransacked and Clarence and Florence tied up. The thieves, following Florence since her arrival, searched there first.
Florence admits she befriended a Dutch man named Cornelius on the ship. Clarence notes the thieves had Dutch accents. The trio, avoiding police to dodge a hefty customs fee, tries to track the diamond through London’s jewelers. They discover a troubling fact: rumors of the diamond’s sale were known weeks before Florence left Venezuela. Someone else was after it.
The danger escalates when they find Cornelius dead in Clarence’s rooms, the diamond placed in his hand. The Dutch gang is framing them. Forced into hiding, Moses pressures Florence for the truth. She confesses: she is not a widow but a con artist working with Nash. The diamond hunters in Venezuela learned of the find, so she and Nash created a decoy. The fake diamond was what she let Cornelius see. The real one was given to her father, Edmund, who posed as her cabdriver. She hasn’t heard from him since.
They track down Edmund’s lodgings, but he’s gone. Clarence discovers from a telegraph clerk that Edmund did send a message, but the clerk was the tall man with the eyepatch. Clarence gets the contents: a meeting place and time. At the meeting, Edmund slips the diamond to Florence. She then lowers her mourning veil, blending into a crowd of hired actresses also dressed in black veils. The Dutch gang, unable to identify her, starts grabbing all the women, leading to their arrest by police.
The diamond is recovered, but Cornelius’s body remains a problem. Moses needs Alexander to vouch they didn’t commit the murder, which he agrees to do.
In a final twist, Moses and Florence try to sell the diamond only to learn it is also a fake. Nash had added his own layer of deception. He brought the real diamond to England himself with proper paperwork. He met Eliza at a port in a different city, and she has been safeguarding the genuine gem all along.
The episode ends with personal revelations. Alexander questions why Eliza lied to him about her trip. Moses prepares to return to Paris, revealing to a surprised Eliza that he has a wife and a baby on the way.
Character Dynamics and Key Moments
The return of Moses Valentine is a central event, re-introducing his street-smart skills and deepening his history. His immediate trust in Eliza and his need for her judgment on Alexander Blake shows their strong bond. His playful rivalry with Clarence provides humor but also highlights his protective nature.
The episode advances the relationship between Eliza Scarlet and Inspector Alexander Blake. Their romance is an open secret that Eliza fears will damage her professional reputation. A key moment occurs when Moses asks Alexander about Eliza’s happiness, and Alexander confidently states, “You can trust Inspector Blake,” showing his commitment to her. Eliza’s secret mission for Nash creates tension with Alexander, who feels shut out when he discovers her lie.
Florence Dodds is initially presented as a nervous widow but is revealed to be a skilled confidence trickster. Her performance and the final reveal of the second fake diamond demonstrate the episode’s theme of layered deceptions. Her relationship with her father, Edmund, adds a sliver of genuine loyalty in a world of cons.
The friendly competition between Moses and Clarence evolves into a reluctant partnership. Their combined skillsโMoses’s security instincts and Clarence’s financial cunningโare ultimately what allow them to survive the Dutch gang’s frame-up and recover the (fake) diamond.
