NCT‘s Moon Taeil is under police investigation for alleged aggravated quasi-rape, sparking widespread outrage among fans and netizens. The 30-year-old idol was questioned by police at Seoul’s Bangbae Police Station and his case was transferred to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office in August, with reports confirming that prosecutors have yet to summon him.
The accusations stem from a June incident where Taeil, alongside two acquaintances, allegedly sexually assaulted an intoxicated woman. None of his accomplices are public figures, and Taeil was summoned for questioning two months later on August 28th. Aggravated quasi-rape refers to sexual assault carried out while armed or in concert with others, targeting a victim unable to resist due to intoxication or incapacitation. If convicted, Taeil could face at least seven years in prison or a life sentence.
Fans have criticized SM Entertainment for their lack of immediate response, with the company releasing a statement only after Taeil’s police appearance. In their statement, SM confirmed Taeil’s involvement in a “criminal sexual offense,” adding that, “After discussions, Taeil has decided to withdraw from the group.” However, they have remained silent on further details, frustrating fans.
Angry fans have demanded strict punishment, with many taking to social media to express their disappointment and outrage. Some even shared videos of cutting up Taeil’s photo cards and merchandise, highlighting the backlash against the artist. Comments like, “Is it really that hard not to commit a crime?” reflect the growing frustration within the fanbase.
Taeil debuted in 2016 with NCT U and later joined NCT 127, gaining considerable fame, especially in Japan and China. Despite the investigation, Taeil continued to participate in public events, including NCT 127’s fan meeting and their recent album release. SM Entertainment has stated that further comments cannot be made while the investigation is ongoing.
