The popular video game Assassin’s Creed is officially becoming a live-action television show. Netflix has given the green light to the project, and production has now started. The series is based on the famous game franchise from Ubisoft, which has sold more than 230 million copies worldwide since its first release in 2007. After nearly five years of development, the show has moved past the planning stage and is now being filmed.
The show’s creators are Roberto Patino, known for his work on Westworld and Sons of Anarchy, and David Wiener, who worked on Halo and The Killing. They are serving as creators, showrunners, and executive producers. This is not the first time the game has been adapted; a movie version starring Michael Fassbender came out in 2016 and made $240 million globally, though it received mixed reviews from critics and fans. The TV series is a separate project with a new team and a different story.
The Show Story and Setting
The Netflix series will tell an original story set in the Roman Empire. Filming is taking place in Rome, Italy, at the famous Cinecittà Studios. The story is set in 64 AD, during a well-known period of Roman history. The official description for the show says it is a “high-octane thriller” focused on a secret war between two hidden groups. One group wants to control humanity’s future, while the other fights to protect free will.
The show’s creators explained their vision in a joint statement.
“We’ve been fans of Assassin’s Creed since its release in 2007. Every day we work on this show, we come away excited and humbled by the possibilities that Assassin’s Creed opens to us. Beneath the scope, the spectacle, the parkour and the thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story — about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith. It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance. But more than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time.”
Who is in the Cast
A large group of actors has been announced for the series. Toby Wallace (Euphoria Season 3, The Society) and Lola Petticrew (Say Nothing) are among the first actors named as series regulars. Other regular cast members include Zachary Hart (Slow Horses), Laura Marcus (Bad Education), Tanzyn Crawford (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), Nabhaan Rizwan, and Claes Bang.
Several well-known actors will appear in recurring roles. These include Noomi Rapace (Prometheus), Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible — Fallout), Ramzy Bedia, and Corrado Invernizzi. New cast members were added in March 2026, with Sandra Guldberg-Kampp (Foundation), Youssef Kerkour, Mirren Mack (28 Years Later: The Bone Temple), and Louis McCartney (Stranger Things: The First Shadow) joining the project. Details about their characters are being kept secret for now.
