The explosive finale of Squid Game Season 3, released on June 27, 2025, dropped a major clue about the franchise’s future. A surprise epilogue scene set in Los Angeles has sparked rumors of a potential U.S.-based spin-off, possibly directed by Hollywood heavyweight David Fincher.
The final moments of the season show a well-dressed woman playing the deadly ddakji game with a desperate man in a dark alley. The scene’s tension and sudden cut to black leave viewers questioning if this is the start of a global expansion for the Squid Game universe.
The U.S. Teaser and Possible Spin-Off Plans
Netflix has not officially confirmed a spin-off, but the cryptic ending strongly suggests bigger ambitions. Earlier reports from U.S. media hinted that David Fincher (known for The Social Network and Zodiac) might helm a project titled Squid Game: America. While unconfirmed, the finale’s Hollywood-style twist aligns with these rumors.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk previously mentioned openness to expanding the franchise. During a press conference on June 9, he said:
“If the opportunity comes, I’d consider doing a spin-off. There are many untold stories, like Captain Park’s past or what the masked men did between Seasons 1 and 2.”
A Hollywood Star’s Surprise Cameo
The L.A. epilogue also features a brief but shocking appearance by a major Hollywood actor, fueling speculation that Netflix wants to attract a wider audience. While Leonardo DiCaprio was previously rumored to join the show, Netflix denied those claims. Instead, another A-lister made a surprise cameo, though their identity remains under wraps.
Actor Lee Byung-hun, who plays the Front Man, added to the mystery during a June 17 interview on The Tonight Show. When asked about a possible spin-off centered on his character, he pressed the “O” (yes) button and said:
“I can’t say for sure, but it’s possible. No one knows what will happen.”
What This Means for the Franchise
Squid Game has already broken records, with Season 2 amassing 68 million views in its first week. Now, the show seems ready to evolve beyond Korea. The U.S. tease could lead to multiple spin-offs, exploring different countries’ versions of the deadly games.
