Ahn Hyo Seop Confirmed to Star in Le Paradis Noir, Based on a Mystery Novel

On October 31, 2024 (KST), Star News reported that actor Ahn Hyo Seop will star in an upcoming K-Drama adaptation of the 2022 novel Le Paradis Noir. The series, directed by Yoon Jong Ho—famous for the hit K-Drama Lovely Runner—is set to follow the original storyline closely, which revolves around themes of family betrayal, hidden relationships, and a murder mystery. Le Paradis Noir centers on a former taekwondo athlete, Cheon Guk, who becomes entangled with a chaebol heiress at a male escort club in Cheongdam-dong.

Cheon Guk, who used to be a bereavement organizer, unexpectedly meets Yoo Ji On, the deceased’s family member, while handling a case of solitary death and falls for her at first sight. A year later, Cheon Guk becomes a male escort at a bar, and their paths cross again when she comes in as a customer. Their connection begins to deepen.

Cheon Guk decides to return the items belonging to Ji On’s late mother that he has kept all this time. However, that same night, a murder occurs, and Cheon Guk finds himself accused of being the murderer. Ji On, not wanting to become the center of gossip, starts looking for ways to prove Cheon Guk’s innocence instead of confirming his alibi. In the process, the two become entangled in a larger incident.

The premise, while retaining elements of romance and suspense, has met with intense criticism, as many K-Drama fans express concerns about portraying a male escort as a central character in a mainstream series.

Fans Voice Concerns About the K-Drama’s Portrayal of a Male Escort

News of Ahn Hyo Seop’s involvement in Le Paradis Noir sparked a wave of negative reactions across K-Drama fan communities, especially on Korean forums like theqoo. Many fans voiced discomfort with the storyline’s portrayal of male escort work, labeling it as inappropriate and out-of-touch with current viewer sensibilities. A sampling of reactions includes pointed critiques about the premise, with fans stating:

  • “The premise is so outdated, for real…”
  • “Calling it a male escort makes it sound nicer than what it is. It’s prostitution. There’s no need to K-Drama-fy this, ugh.”
  • “Huh…?”
  • “This is going to be so harmful.”
  • “Are we living in 2004 right now?”
  • “Birds of a feather flock together, though. True love between prostitutes would be OK.”
  • “I’d watch it if he was like a good-looking, stay-at-home douchebag. But a male prostitute…? What’s with the character setting?”
  • “Please stop bringing prostitution into K-Drama. It’s disgusting.”
  • “I’m just cracking up at ‘Si Bel Homme.’ Haha.”
  • “The whole premise is f*cking disgusting. It’s disappointing to know that people are still trying to make K-Dramas about stuff like this. And that actors are willing to be cast in them.”

Some fans noted that the storyline’s focus on a character involved in the escort industry could send harmful messages to younger viewers. The fact that Cheon Guk is portrayed as a sympathetic figure further raised concerns among those who believe such depictions may normalize or romanticize the escort industry.

Director Yoon Jong Ho’s Response to Public Criticism

In response to the intense backlash, director Yoon Jong Ho addressed the concerns via the production company, Simstory. The director’s statement aimed to clarify that the series is still in early stages and that Ahn Hyo Seop’s casting is not officially finalized. He indicated that discussions are ongoing regarding the storyline and casting decisions, stating:

“Nothing has been set in stone as of yet.”

Yoon Jong Ho’s response seems aimed at assuring the public that their input and concerns are being considered before making any firm decisions regarding the show’s narrative or casting. This statement, however, has not entirely quelled the criticism. Many fans remain skeptical and continue to express reservations about the potential direction of the show.

Complex Themes: Balancing Mystery, Romance, and Sensitive Subjects

Le Paradis Noir incorporates a blend of romance and suspense through Cheon Guk’s and Ji On’s evolving relationship and the subsequent murder accusation. While such themes are familiar in K-Dramas, the inclusion of a male escort character has generated controversy not only due to its rare portrayal in Korean television but also because it raises questions about the boundaries of mainstream K-Drama content.

Some viewers argue that the show could explore meaningful narratives if handled with sensitivity and maturity. However, others are concerned that romanticizing or dramatizing this type of work could be harmful, especially given the younger demographics who often watch K-Dramas. Despite director Yoon’s response, public opinion remains divided.
