After more than a decade off the air, the Stargate is officially back online. Amazon MGM Studios has greenlit a new Stargate series for Prime Video, marking the first new live-action television entry in the franchise since 2011. The project is led by Martin Gero, a veteran writer and producer from the original series, ensuring the new chapter is built by someone with the franchise in their DNA.
The Creative Team Behind the New Stargate
The new series brings together a powerful mix of franchise veterans and the original film’s creators. Martin Gero, who worked on Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate SG-1, and Stargate Universe, serves as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer. He is joined by executive producers Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures, as well as Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, the co-writer and director of the original 1994 film. In a move that will reassure longtime followers, Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, the longtime creative forces behind the previous TV shows, are onboard as consulting producers.
Gero describes the assignment as a personal milestone. In a statement, he said:
“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. Stargate taught me everything about making television โ it’s written into my DNA. I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase.”
What We Know About the Show’s Story
Specific plot details for the new series are being kept secret. Amazon has described it as a “bold new chapter” and a “visionary new chapter” that will honor the franchise’s legacy while moving it into a new future. Importantly, Gero has confirmed in a video announcement that the show will not be a reboot. This suggests the new story will exist within the established universe, though it is being designed to welcome new viewers who are unfamiliar with the previous lore.
Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV development for Amazon MGM Studios, stated the new series aims to be “an ambitious and emotionally resonant future” for the franchise.
A Legacy of Wormhole Travel
The Stargate franchise began with the 1994 film directed by Roland Emmerich, starring Kurt Russell and James Spader. The movie introduced the concept of the Stargate, an ancient ring-shaped device that creates a stable wormhole, allowing for instantaneous travel to other planets.
The concept was vastly expanded in the television series Stargate SG-1, which premiered in 1997 and ran for ten seasons. The show followed the adventures of SG-1, a military team exploring the galaxy, encountering advanced aliens who had posed as gods from Earth’s ancient mythologies. Its success led to the spin-off Stargate: Atlantis, which ran for five seasons, and Stargate Universe, which concluded in 2011. The franchise also includes direct-to-video movies and a web series.
Why Stargate’s Return Matters Now
The return of Stargate comes at a time when science fiction is a dominant force in streaming. With Paramount+ finding success with new Star Trek series, Amazon is now positioning Stargate as a key sci-fi property for Prime Video. The franchise has been dormant since earlier revival attempts stalled, making this official green light a major victory for its dedicated fanbase.
The move follows Amazon’s acquisition of MGM Studios, which gave it control of the Stargate library and rights. The backing of a deep-pocketed streamer like Amazon promises a level of production value that the previous series, which were filmed on television budgets often in the forests of Vancouver, could not achieve. This opens up new possibilities for visual effects and alien worlds.
What’s Next for the New Stargate Series
Production details, casting announcements, and an official title for the new Stargate series are expected to be revealed at a later date. All previous Stargate content, including the original film, Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and Stargate Universe, is available to stream on Prime Video for those looking to revisit the universe.
