Fans took to social media to share their excitement about this episode. Many said it finally felt like classic Outlander after some mixed reactions to the season premiere. The Main Cast Returning for Episode 5
Sam Heughan returned as Jamie Fraser, the heart of the series. In this episode, Jamie faced a direct threat from Captain Cunningham at Lodge Night. He also had to make a risky deal with Benjamin Cleveland to protect his family. Jamie quoted the Declaration of Arbroath during a tense standoff and survived a stabbing to the chest.
Caitríona Balfe played Claire Fraser. She stayed at the Big House while Jamie confronted their enemy. Claire treated Captain Cunningham after Buck shot him. She also had a tense conversation with Elspeth Cunningham, who believed Jamie deserved execution. Balfe also serves as an executive producer on the final season.
Sophie Skelton appeared as Brianna MacKenzie. While in Savannah, Brianna painted a portrait of Amaranthus and Trevor. She worried about Roger fighting in the battle and later went with William to find him on the battlefield.
Richard Rankin played Roger MacKenzie. He was forced to fight in the Siege of Savannah after being captured. Roger wrote a letter to Brianna apologizing for fighting. He also comforted a young French drummer boy named Christophe before carrying him to safety. The episode included a flashback of Roger with his father Jeremiah MacKenzie in a London Tube tunnel during a WWII air raid.
New and Recurring Guest Stars in Send for the Devil
Diarmaid Murtagh joined the cast as Buck MacKenzie. Buck is the son of Dougal MacKenzie and Geillis Duncan. He proved his loyalty to Jamie by shooting Captain Cunningham before Cunningham could kill Jamie. The episode also kept a secret from Buck, as Claire and Jamie decided not to tell him they killed both of his parents.
Kieran Bew played Captain Charles Cunningham, the main villain of the episode. Cunningham wanted to capture Jamie and present him to Redcoat officer Patrick Ferguson to be hanged. He stabbed Jamie in the chest during their fight at the trading post. Buck shot Cunningham in the back, leaving him paralyzed from the bullet in his spine.
Frances Tomelty appeared as Elspeth Cunningham, the captain‘s mother. She spent time with Claire at the Big House praying for their loved ones. However, she made things tense when she told Claire that Jamie had earned his execution as a pardoned traitor.
Charles Vandervaart returned as William Ransom. He warned Brianna that the battle had begun. William also proposed marriage to Amaranthus Cowden Grey. The two solidified their engagement while together in a gazebo. Later, William learned that Benjamin, Amaranthus’s dead husband, is actually alive and working as a turncoat for the Continental Army.
Izzy Meikle-Small played Rachel Murray, though her role was smaller in this episode. Her brother Denzell Hunter, played by Joey Phillips, appeared on the battlefield treating wounded soldiers. Denzell told William that Rachel had given birth to a baby with Ian.
Tomisin Ajani played Aaron Whittaker, the neighbor who warned Jamie that Captain Cunningham was coming for him. Whittaker had been suspicious of Claire and Jamie in an earlier episode but came to show his gratitude.
Carla Woodcock appeared as Amaranthus Cowden Grey. She continued her relationship with William and agreed to marry him. She suggested they do not need to wait for marriage to try for a child.
Antony Byrne played Benjamin Cleveland, a militia leader Jamie made a deal with to stop Cunningham. Claire called him “the devil” when he arrived at the Big House. The deal with Cleveland brings Jamie one step closer to the fate described in Frank Randall‘s book.
