Horror fans just got their first real peek at the upcoming Crystal Lake series, and it arrives with a bloody knife, a creepy campsite, and the promise of chaos. Peacock chose Friday the 13th to drop the first three images from its highly anticipated Friday the 13th prequel, giving audiences a glimpse of the terror waiting for them later this year.
The show, produced by horror studio A24, takes viewers back to the beginning. It tells the story of how Camp Crystal Lake became the most dangerous summer spot in movie history. With production already wrapped and a 2026 release on the horizon, here is everything you need to know about the series based on the new reveals.
What the New Images Show About the Series
The three first-look images focus on setting a mood rather than giving away major plot points. The first photo shows a hand gripping a large knife, with blood dripping down the blade and onto the fingers holding it. This is widely believed to be Linda Cardellini‘s hand as Pamela Voorhees, hinting at her violent turn long before Jason became the face of the franchise.
The second image captures an empty, misty pool at night. A single lounge chair sits abandoned by the water, and a dim light glows from a nearby building. This shot emphasizes the isolation and dread that defines the original film’s atmosphere.
The third picture is the most mysterious. It appears to show two bodies lying close together on the ground. Some reports suggest it could be two camp counselors in a romantic moment, while others point out it might actually be two dead bodies stacked on top of each other. Either way, the image carries the series’ tagline of blending teen life with sudden violence.
Linda Cardellini Leads the Cast as Pamela Voorhees
Linda Cardellini steps into the role of Pamela Voorhees, the grieving mother whose son’s death turns her into the original killer from the 1980 film. In the new series, Pamela is portrayed as a single mother who once dreamed of a singing career. She gave up her ambitions to raise her special needs son, Jason. After tragedy strikes and she loses him, her life takes a dark turn.
Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane has praised Cardellini’s performance, saying she is “inconceivably brilliant” in the role and predicting she will receive significant attention for her work.
Joining Cardellini is young actor Callum Vinson as a child version of Jason Voorhees. This marks the first time audiences will see Jason as a living boy before his drowning and transformation into the iconic killer.
Full Cast and Characters Confirmed So Far
The ensemble cast brings together both new faces and characters connected to the original movie. Alongside Cardellini and Vinson, the series stars:
- William Catlett as Levon Brooks
- Devin Kessler as Briana Brooks
- Cameron Scoggins as Dorf
- Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace
- Nick Cordileone as Ralph, a character connected to the original film’s “Crazy Ralph”
- Danielle Kotch as Claudette, another original film character
- Phoenix Parnevik as Barry, also from the first movie
- Joy Suprano as Rita
- Nancy Nagrant joins the cast in an undisclosed role
Earlier reports mentioned original Friday the 13th star Adrienne King, who played final girl Alice Hardy, might appear. However, with the change in creative leadership, it remains unclear if her role is still part of the plan.
Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane Takes Over After Creative Changes
The road to Crystal Lake has not been smooth. Originally announced in 2022, the project began with Bryan Fuller as showrunner. In May 2024, Fuller exited the series over creative differences with A24. He posted on Instagram at the time, “For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material.”
Filmmaker Mike Flanagan publicly mourned Fuller’s departure, tweeting that Fuller “was onto something terrific.”
Shortly after, Brad Caleb Kane took over as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Kane also serves as co-showrunner on HBO’s upcoming It: Welcome to Derry, another horror prequel series. His experience with expanding iconic horror stories made him a natural fit for Crystal Lake.
Kane expressed his excitement about joining the project in a statement, saying his creative path was “destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask” after watching the films as a child.
The Series Tone: A Paranoid ’70s Thriller With Rivers of Blood
In interviews with Entertainment Weekly, Kane described Crystal Lake as more than just a slasher show. He explained the series draws from the paranoid thrillers of the 1970s, focusing on mistrust of institutions and the social changes of the era, including the women’s liberation movement.
“It has all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher,” Kane said. “There are rivers of blood in the show. There are very, I think, ingenious kill sequences and deaths and murders, but it’s all done in service of character and theme and place and time.”
This approach suggests the show will build suspense and character development before delivering the violent moments fans expect from the franchise.
Who Is Directing the Episodes
Crystal Lake spans eight episodes, with a team of directors handling different installments:
- Michael Lennox directs episodes 101-103 and also serves as executive producer
- Directing duo Celine Held and Logan George handle episodes 104-106
- Quyen Tran directs episodes 107-108
