The 30th edition of the Screen Actors Guild Awards was held on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024, honoring the best of TV and film performances of 2023. The ceremony, which was streamed live on Netflix, had many memorable moments, but none more so than Pedro Pascal’s surprising and emotional speech after winning the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series.

A Shocking Victory of Pedro Pascal

Pascal, 48, who was nominated for his role in HBO’s bleak apocalyptic epic, “The Last of Us”, beat out four other contenders in his category: Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen from “Succession”, and Billy Crudup from “The Morning Show”. Pascal’s win was unexpected, as many predicted that one of the “Succession” stars would take home the trophy, based on their success at the Emmys and the Golden Globes.

He began his speech by admitting that he had indulged in some drinks, thinking he had no chance of winning. “This is wrong, for a number of reasons. I’m a little drunk. I thought I could get drunk,” he said.

He also thanked his own family, especially his mother, who was watching from Chile, and his brother, who was in the audience. He dedicated his award to them, saying, “This is for you, mom. This is for you, bro. I love you so much”.

Pascal ended his speech candidly, saying, “I’m going to have a panic attack and I’m going to leave”. He then walked off the stage, holding his trophy and wiping his eyes.
