A simple investigation into milk cartons has led Carol Sturka to the most disturbing truth of her post-apocalyptic life. In Episode 6 of Pluribus, titled “HDP”, the mystery of the Others’ food supply is solved with a horrifying and unforgettable revelation. The scene inside a cold storage warehouse, which ended Episode 5 on a cliffhanger, has now been fully shown and explained, becoming one of the series’ most talked-about moments.
Actress Rhea Seehorn, who plays the immune survivor Carol, recently shared key details about filming that pivotal scene. She specifically praised the work of the show’s props department for their critical role in making the horror feel real. The episode, which debuted on Apple TV+ on November 28, 2025, confirms that the show’s creators are not shying away from complex and unsettling science fiction concepts.
What Carol Found in the Freezer
At the end of Episode 5, Carol entered an Agri-Jet warehouse, pulled back a tarp, and reacted with stunned horror. Episode 6 picks up immediately from that moment. Inside the freezing cold warehouse, Carol discovers rows of human body parts that have been dismembered and sealed in plastic wrap.
The scene goes further, revealing an industrial meat grinder and large cooking vats in a connected room, painting a complete and gruesome picture of a processing operation. This substance is what the Others call “HDP” or “Human Derived Protein”. It is a key ingredient in the shelf-stable, amber-colored liquid that the hive mind consumes, which Carol had previously found being poured into empty milk cartons.
Rhea Seehorn on Filming the Pivotal Scene
In a recent interview, Rhea Seehorn explained the intense focus required to bring Carol’s discovery to life. She emphasized that Carol is not a superhero, but an ordinary person facing extraordinary and traumatic circumstances.
“This is not a superhuman. This is a normal person who got faced with super not-normal circumstances,” Seehorn stated.
This guiding principle shaped her performance. She aimed to show a genuine human reaction, noting that a real person might actually get sick after seeing such a thing. For Seehorn, the scene was about balancing sheer terror with a twisted sense of victory for Carol, who finally finds concrete proof that her worst suspicions about the Others are correct.
Seehorn reserved special praise for the crew that made the shocking moment believable. The realistic props were essential for her to generate a genuine reaction.
“Props did such a great job,” Seehorn said, highlighting the department’s contribution.
Creator Vince Gilligan added a personal and surprising touch to the scene. He revealed that the prop head Carol stares at in the freezer was modeled on his own face, making it his secret cameo in the series.
The Hive Mind’s Explanation
After her discovery, Carol drives to Las Vegas to warn fellow immune survivor Koumba Diabatรฉ, played by Samba Schutte. To her surprise, Diabatรฉ is already aware of the HDP. He simply asked the Others about it, and they provided a video explanation.
The video features a major celebrity cameo from John Cena, playing a version of himself assimilated into the hive mind. In a calm and matter-of-fact monologue, Cena explains the hive’s difficult position. They strictly cannot kill or harm any life, which includes plants and animals. This means they cannot farm crops or slaughter animals for meat.
However, they must feed over 7.3 billion members of the collective. To solve this “caloric deficit,” they use pre-existing human remains from the millions who died during the initial “Joining” event, as well as from the approximately 100,000 people who continue to die daily from natural causes. They process these remains into HDP, which makes up 8-12% of their nutritional liquid.
Cena’s character admits the hive is “not that keen” on this solution but sees it as a necessary measure for survival. This coldly logical justification highlights the unsettling ethical framework of the Others, who prioritize their core directives above all else.
A New Threat to the Immune
The episode delivers a second major revelation with dire implications for Carol. Diabatรฉ informs her that the Others have developed a method to assimilate the few remaining immune people. The process involves tailoring the virus to an individual’s stem cells, which must be extracted directly from their body with a large needle.
Because this procedure is invasive and causes harm, the hive’s own rules require them to obtain the person’s consent. Carol immediately contacts the Others and refuses to give her permission. However, a troubling theory has emerged among fans. In a previous episode, Carol mentioned she had frozen her eggs. These stored eggs contain her stem cells, and they may not be protected by the hive’s rule against harming her directly. This loophole could allow the Others to assimilate Carol without technically violating her bodily autonomy, putting her in grave danger.
Carol’s Growing Isolation
Beyond the physical threats, Episode 6 deepens Carol’s emotional struggle. She learns from Diabatรฉ that the other immune survivors around the world have been holding twice-weekly Zoom meetings and collectively voted not to invite her. Some were reportedly offended that she did not invite non-English speakers to join her earlier mission in Spain.
This rejection compounds her loneliness, making her an outcast not only from the hive mind but also from her own kind. Diabatรฉ observes that Carol is, at her core, a deeply lonely person, yet even he politely declines her offer to continue their partnership after their tense meeting in Vegas.
