Pluribus, the hit sci-fi show from Apple TV, has left fans in a huge state of uncertainty. The Season 1 finale ended with more questions than answers, setting the stage for a major conflict in the already-confirmed second season. The show, starring Rhea Seehorn and created by Vince Gilligan, finished its first run as the streamer’s most-watched series ever. Here are the biggest puzzles Season 2 must solve.

1. What is Carol Going to Do With an Atom Bomb?

The finale’s biggest shock came in its final seconds. After returning from a worldwide trip with her hive-mind companion Zosia, Carol Sturka lands in her Albuquerque driveway via helicopter. She tells her only human ally, Manousos Oviedo, that she is ready to save the world. When he asks about the large metal crate delivered with her, she says two words: “Atom bomb“.

This callback is to a moment in Episode 3. Carol, testing the limits of the hive mind’s promise to make her happy, asked if they would bring her a nuclear weapon. An “Other” responded, “Ultimatelyโ€ฆ yes. We would move heaven and earth to make you happy”. Seventy days later, she collected on that offer. Now, the mystery is its purpose. Will Carol use it to destroy infrastructure critical to the hive? Is it a threat to stop her own conversion? Or is it a symbol of her renewed, extreme commitment to resistance? Co-writer Alison Tatlock admitted the writers planted this without a specific plan, saying, “Future us is present us. We’re having to figure it out now”.

โ€œCarol Sturka, what is this?โ€ Manousos asked, pointing to the crate. โ€œAtom bomb,โ€ she said nonchalantly.

2. Can Manousos’s Radio Frequency Theory Save Humanity?

While Carol was on her romantic getaway, Manousos was busy with research. His work could be the key to reversing the global “Joining.” Since his introduction, he has been fascinated by a specific radio frequency: 8613.0 kHz. He discovered that when the hive-minded “Others” are under stress, the steady pulse on this frequency turns to static.

In the finale, he conducted an experiment. After deliberately upsetting an “Other” to cause convulsions, he placed a radio tuned to 8613.0 on the person’s chest. He whispered, “Rick, I know you are there. I help you. I am here. You come back, yes?”. The show suggests the original human consciousness might still be trapped inside, and this frequency could be a lifeline. His subsequent study of electromagnetism and “standing waves” in textbooks points to a scientific method to disrupt the hive’s connection. Season 2 will likely see him and Carol trying to turn this theory into a real weapon.

3. How Much Time Does Carol Have Before She is Forced to Join?

Carol’s return to the fight was triggered by a personal betrayal. She discovered the hive mind had found a way to convert her without her direct consent. Earlier in the season, she refused to allow them to extract stem cells from her body. However, the “Others” located her frozen eggs, stored years earlier with her late partner Helen. They can use these to create the tailored pathogen needed to assimilate her.

Zosia revealed they are actively working on the process. When Carol asked how long she had, Zosia estimated “a month, maybe three”. This creates a firm ticking clock for Season 2. Carol is no longer fighting for an abstract humanity; she is fighting for her own mind and identity, with a deadline of just one to three months.

4. Does Zosiaโ€”or the Real Zosiaโ€”Actually Love Carol?

Carol’s complex relationship with Zosia was the emotional core of Season 1. A major unresolved question is whether the affection Zosia shows is genuine or just the hive mind’s programmed response to keep Carol content. The show offers evidence for both sides.

Zosia began using the personal pronoun “I” at Carol’s encouragement, suggesting individuation. However, she also told Carol, “We love you exactly the same as we love Manousos,” which deeply upset Carol. Creator Vince Gilligan has said that if restoring the world is possible, then “you’ve got to think there’s a real Zosia, in there somewhere”. This implies that saving humanity could also mean saving the individual woman Carol fell for. Season 2 will need to explore whether their connection was real or a sophisticated manipulation.

5. Where is the Hive Mind’s Giant Antenna and What is Its Goal?

The hive mind’s ultimate plan extends beyond Earth. In Episode 8, Zosia explained to Carol that their main objective is to build a “giant antenna“. This antenna would send the joining signal across the universe to other planets. Zosia pointed out a star system (Kepler-22) and a water-covered planet (Kepler-22b) as the signal’s possible origin.

This reveals the invasion is not just about Earth but is a step in a larger cosmic process. For Season 2, finding and potentially destroying this antenna could be central to Carol and Manousos’s mission. The whereabouts of this structure on Earth and the full scope of the hive’s interstellar plans remain a complete mystery.

6. When Will Season 2 Actually Be Released?

Fans eager for answers will need to be patient. Pluribus was renewed for Season 2 before Season 1 even premiered, as part of Apple TV’s initial two-season order. However, production is a lengthy process.

The writers’ room for Season 2 opened in late November 2025. Due to the show’s high costโ€”over $15 million per episodeโ€”and complex visual effects, filming is not expected to begin until spring 2026. Based on this timeline, most sources suggest a release window no earlier than late 2027 or early 2028. Vince Gilligan has indicated he is open to making more seasons, telling Variety he would make “as many seasons of Pluribus as star Rhea Seehorn wants,” and estimating maybe four seasons total.
