The stars of Apple TVโ€™s hit sci-fi series Pluribus have confirmed the one thing fans might not want to hear: they are just as in the dark about the show’s future as everyone else. In recent interviews following the season one finale, actors Rhea Seehorn and Karolina Wydra shared that they have little information about where creator Vince Gilligan is taking the story next.

This news comes as the showโ€™s writers have only just begun meeting to plan the second season, which was officially confirmed years ago. The first season ended on a massive cliffhanger, with Seehornโ€™s character, Carol Sturka, arriving home with an atomic bomb, ready to โ€œsave the worldโ€ alongside fellow immune survivor Manousos.

When asked about fan theories and what might happen next, both lead actors were clear they have no special insight. Rhea Seehorn, who plays the resistant and miserable Carol, directly addressed the uncertainty.

โ€œI have โ€˜no ideaโ€™ what Vince has planned for the show,โ€ Seehorn confirmed in an interview.

Karolina Wydra, who plays Zosia, a member of the hive mind known as the Others, enjoys watching the audienceโ€™s reaction but is similarly unaware of the plotโ€™s direction. She praised the show for making people think deeply. This lack of knowledge extends to the showโ€™s production team. Gordon Smith, a writer and director for the series, along with creator Vince Gilligan, has indicated that season two will not premiere in 2026, confirming a long wait is ahead.

While the story details are a mystery, some facts about the seasonโ€™s production have been confirmed. Apple TV+ originally gave the show a two-season order when it was first announced in September 2022. This means a second season was always part of the plan.

The writersโ€™ room for the new season reconvened in November 2025. Vince Gilligan mentioned at the time that while he was excited, he and his team did not have all the answers for where the story is headed.

Based on the timeline of the first season, which faced delays from Hollywood strikes and has significant visual effects, fans should prepare for a lengthy wait. The first season began filming in February 2024 and was released in November 2025. If filming for season two starts in the spring of 2026, a realistic release window would be late 2027 or early 2028.

The reason for all the speculation is the dramatic and open-ended season one finale. The season followed Carol Sturka, one of only 13 people on Earth immune to a global alien virus that transforms people into a peaceful, single-minded collective called the Others.

After a period of intense loneliness, Carol developed a complex relationship with Zosia, a member of the Others assigned to be her companion. Their connection culminated in a romantic kiss in the seasonโ€™s penultimate episode. However, the finale revealed this bond was built on a painful betrayal. Zosia informed Carol that the Others had a plan to use Carolโ€™s own frozen eggs to eventually turn her into one of them, removing her immunity.

Heartbroken and feeling manipulated, Carol left Zosia. She returned to her home in Albuquerque, where another immune survivor, Manousos, had finally arrived after a dangerous journey. Carol landed in a helicopter, and the final scene revealed she had used the Others’ desire to please her to make an unthinkable request.

Carol followed up on the question she posed back in episode three: would the Others give her an atom bomb if she requested one? The answer is yes.

Carol steps out with the encased nuclear weapon, tells Manousos โ€œYou win. We save the world,โ€ and the season ends. This leaves huge questions for season two: Will they use the bomb? Is it a weapon or a deterrent? And can they actually find a way to reverse the effects of the Joining?.

Although no official casting announcements have been made for season two, the core actors from season one are expected to return. The series is built around Rhea Seehornโ€™s performance, and Vince Gilligan has stated he wants to continue the show for as long as Seehorn wants to play Carol.

The finale also sets up a crucial partnership between Carol and Manousos, ensuring actor Carlos Manuel Vesga will have a major role. Karolina Wydraโ€™s Zosia remains a key figure in Carolโ€™s life, and her character showed signs of developing individual emotions separate from the hive mind.

Other surviving immune characters introduced in season one, like Koumba Diabatรฉ (Samba Schutte) and Laxmi (Menik Gooneratne), could also return as potential allies.

The simple answer is that only Vince Gilligan and his writing team know for sure. However, the finale provides clear direction. Season two will likely focus on the uneasy alliance between Carol and Manousos as they investigate the source of the alien signal and decide what to do with the tremendous power Carol now holds.

A major theme will be exploring Carolโ€™s motivations. Seehorn herself has pondered whether Carol is a true hero or someone acting only when directly threatened. The dynamic with Zosia will also remain central, as the show explores whether their feelings were ever genuine or purely a manipulation by the collective.

Vince Gilligan has suggested he sees a story that could span roughly three to four seasons, but he is not locked into a set plan and is open to change if the writers find a better path. For now, fans, and even the showโ€™s stars, will have to wait for the next piece of the puzzle.
