Kalki 2898 AD: Big Debut, Big Expectations
Directed by Nag Ashwin, “Kalki 2898 AD” opened strong on June 27th across India and worldwide. The film, which blends elements of the Hindu epic Mahabharata with a futuristic setting, is a mega-budget production reportedly costing a staggering Rs 600 crore. This hefty price tag comes with high expectations, and the movie was expected to earn a total of Rs 300 crore worldwide within its first two days of release. However, it fell short of that target, managing Rs 280 crore globally in that timeframe.
Strong Start, Steeper Drop
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, “Kalki 2898 AD” earned a massive Rs 95.3 crore on its opening day in India. This impressive debut positioned the film as the third-biggest opener of all time in the country. However, the movie saw a significant drop in earnings on its second day, collecting Rs 54 crore across all languages. This translates to a decline of over 43%.
Telugu Market Sees Surprising Dip
The drop in earnings was particularly surprising in the Telugu market, where the film was expected to perform exceptionally well. “Kalki 2898 AD” opened with a strong Rs 65.8 crore collection in Telugu on day one. However, on day two, the Telugu version only managed Rs 25.65 crore, a significant decrease. Industry experts are still analyzing the reason for this unexpected drop.
Performance Across Languages
Despite the drop in Telugu earnings, “Kalki 2898 AD” still managed to perform well in other languages. The Hindi version maintained consistent earnings, collecting Rs 22.5 crore on both days. The Tamil version collected Rs 3.5 crore on day two, following an opening day collection of Rs 4.5 crore. The Malayalam version earned a total of Rs 4 crore in two days, while the Kannada version brought in Rs 0.35 crore.
Positive Reviews and Star Power
“Kalki 2898 AD” boasts a stellar cast alongside Prabhas. Deepika Padukone plays the role of Sumati, while Amitabh Bachchan portrays the character of The Immortal Ashwatthama. The film also features renowned actors like Kamal Haasan as the villain Yaskin, Disha Patani, Saswata Chatterjee, and Shobhana. There are even special cameo appearances by Dulquer Salmaan, Vijay Deverakonda, and Mrunal Thakur.
The film has reportedly received positive responses from critics and audiences alike. Whether the positive word-of-mouth can help the movie maintain its momentum and bridge the gap to its projected earnings remains to be seen.
With the weekend upon us, it will be interesting to see if “Kalki 2898 AD” can regain its opening day momentum. The film will need strong weekend collections to stay on track and achieve its box office targets.
