Amazon Prime Video just dropped a wild new action movie that mixes ballet with bloody fights. Pretty Lethal arrived on the streaming platform on March 25, 2026, and people are already talking about its crazy concept. The film brings together five young ballerinas who go from dancing on stage to fighting for their lives.
Director Vicky Jewson created what the cast calls “ballet-fu” – a mix of ballet moves and martial arts. The movie takes a simple idea and runs with it. A group of teenage dancers, all wearing their tutus, must use their dance training to take down a group of dangerous men. It sounds strange, but the action sequences work really well.
What Is Pretty Lethal About
The story follows a ballet troupe on their way to a big competition in Budapest. Their bus breaks down in the middle of a forest during a storm. The girls find shelter at a nearby inn run by Devora Kasimer, played by Uma Thurman. But things quickly turn bad when they learn the men running the hotel are hurting people.
The girls have to band together to survive. They cannot call for help. Their phones do not work. The only weapons they have are their ballet skills and whatever they can find in the inn. What makes this movie different is that the dancers do not become trained killers overnight. They use actual ballet moves – kicks, spins, and jumps – to fight back.
The film does not try to be logical. It is pure entertainment. Watching the girls find creative ways to fight while wearing their dance outfits is the main draw. The action scenes are fast, bloody, and surprisingly fun.
The Cast Brings the Action to Life
Maddie Ziegler leads the group as Bones. She has a real dance background from her time on Dance Moms and in music videos. Ziegler trained for three weeks in Budapest before filming started. She worked on both ballet and stunt work every day.
“We instantly clicked and we were like, ‘Oh, we’re family.’ It was just really special and cool, and we still keep in touch every day,” Ziegler said about working with her co-stars.
Lana Condor, known for the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before movies, plays against type as Princess, the rich mean girl. Avantika, who stood out in the 2023 Mean Girls movie, plays Grace, a religious member of the group. Iris Apatow and Millicent Simmonds play sisters Zoe and Chloe. Simmonds, who is deaf in real life, worked with the director to make her character deaf as well. The film uses this as a strength, not a weakness.
Uma Thurman plays the villain Devora Kasimer. The Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill star brings her action movie experience to the role. She plays a former ballet star who now runs the deadly inn. Thurman clearly enjoys playing the bad guy, and her performance adds weight to the film.
The Ballet-Fu Fighting Style
Director Vicky Jewson spent time with the Royal Ballet Company in London before making this movie. She talked to real ballerinas about their training and how much pain they can handle. What she learned changed how she saw dancers.
“The ballerina is this perfect, fragile, delicate little creature, and sometimes that’s how the world perceives femininity,” Jewson told Variety. “They undermine our strength, and they undermine our grit, and so I felt like it was a perfect moment to really bust open that stereotype.”
Jewson worked with 87North Productions, the team behind action movies like Bullet Train and The Fall Guy. Her main rule was simple: every fight move must start as a dance move. The team created what they call “ballet-fu.” Each actress had both a stunt double and a ballet double. The ballet doubles came from the Royal Opera in London.
The actresses went through close to a month of training in Budapest. They learned both dance routines and fight choreography at the same time. Wearing pointe shoes all day was the hardest part for most of them.
“I grossly underestimated how painful it would be to wear them all day long,” Condor said. “There were days where I’m like, my feet can’t handle it.”
Ziegler added, “The best part is when you hit hour five or six and your feet just go numb. Then you can move through the day.”
What Critics and Viewers Are Saying
Pretty Lethal currently holds a 63% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 23 reviews. The response has been mixed but mostly positive. Critics praise the action sequences and the cast’s chemistry. The main complaint is that the story is thin.
Ross Bonaime from Collider wrote, “This isn’t going to be the next John Wick, but it’s certainly an enjoyable, often unexpectedly grisly action film and a solid way to spend 90 minutes.”
Viewers on IMDb are also sharing their thoughts. One user said, “Although Pretty Lethal is an Amazon Prime Original, it feels like a Netflix movie. That’s not necessarily a bad thing; it’s the kind of film that’s perfectly entertaining for its 90 minute runtime.”
Another viewer called it “so entertaining,” adding, “I really liked this movie! It was fun, entertaining, had some laughs, dancing and blood. I thought the main five girls were so good. They all had great chemistry together.”
A third fan described it as “Black Swan meets Heathers,” noting, “Wow, I really enjoyed this campy film. Some of this ballet-killing choreography was just hysterical, it was really eccentric with some fantastic gore.”
Behind the Scenes Changes
Pretty Lethal was not always called by this name. The film was first announced as Ballerina Overdrive in February 2023. The original cast included Game of Thrones star Lena Headey, Transformers actress Isabela Merced, and Yara Shahidi. But production got delayed.
By the time filming started in Budapest in August 2024, Headey, Merced, and Shahidi had left the project. The studio brought in Ziegler, Avantika, and Thurman to replace them. The film also got a new title. These changes worked out well, as the new cast members bring strong chemistry to the screen.
