Korean media reports don’t seem positive.
Red Velvet‘s Joy has recently become the talk of the town among Korean netizens after she publicly complained about SM Entertainment staff in recent weeks.
Most recently, Joy openly expressed her dissatisfaction when talking to fans about the group’s latest music video, “Cosmic,” on Bubble. Though the video was widely loved and appreciated by fans, Joy seemed unhappy with the staff’s response to her opinions and suggestions.
Joy’s messages have since become a hot topic online, with posts on multiple community sites going viral and triggering mixed reactions from netizens. An article from TVreport about Joy’s messages and the implications they may have on her contract has become the most-viewed piece on NAVER, with more than 80,000 views in the past few hours.
I don’t know… They completely didn’t listen to our opinions and just told us to wait, but I am now watching a music video without anything that has been edited.

However, her complaints towards SM can be tracked back to even before the album and music video were released or announced. Back in the beginning of June the Red Velvet star openly criticised the company for not having announced the group’s comeback yet, even though they had been preparing for weeks.
I’m curious if it’s still supposed to be a secret, if they forgot to inform us, or if they’re planning to announce it next week.

As a result, Joy’s continued disappointment and discontent with SM Entertainment has led fans to worry that their relationship might be strained — and that the decision to renew her contract may be affected. Red Velvet are nearing the date of their 10th anniversary, which also means that it’s time to think about whether all five members will renew contracts with SM again or opt to move to another company.
Only Irene and Seulgi are confirmed to have renewed with SM among the five stars. Unfortunately, there has been no news regarding Joy, Wendy, and Yeri‘s contract renewals. All these are pushing Korean media outlets to assume that Red Velvet’s future as a whole is uncertain. Joy’s public criticism of the company has only increased the anxiety surrounding it.
Through Cosmic, Red Velvet has become the girl group with the most album releases under SM Entertainment. As they commemorate their past ten years together, the question remains: How much longer will they be able to keep going?
