Fans of Alex and Henry’s love story have a exciting new update on the sequel. Taylor Zakhar Perez, who plays Alex Claremont-Diaz, has shared a hopeful timeline for when the cameras will start rolling on the next chapter.

The sequel, officially titled Red, White & Royal Wedding, was formally greenlit by Amazon MGM Studios in October. The project brings back the core cast but sees a change in director, with Jamie Babbit taking over from Matthew Lรณpez.

The Latest Filming Timeline

During a recent public appearance, Taylor Zakhar Perez offered the most current update on the production schedule. The actor confirmed that work on the film is imminent.

โ€œWeโ€™re about to work on it, weโ€™re shooting the Red, White & Royal Blue sequel in the new year,โ€ Perez stated.

This aligns with his other recent comments where he revealed he has already read the script for the new film.

โ€œThereโ€™s a huge appetite for the sequel so Iโ€™m looking forward to it. I read the script and itโ€™s really good,โ€ he said.

When pressed for more specific story details, the actor remained tight-lipped, joking that revealing anything would cause Amazon to “find him.”

A New Director and a New Chapter

The sequel brings a fresh creative voice with Jamie Babbit stepping in as director. Babbit is no stranger to iconic queer stories, having directed the seminal romantic comedy But Iโ€™m a Cheerleader. She expressed her enthusiasm for joining the project.

โ€œAfter directing But Iโ€™m a Cheerleader in my twenties, Iโ€™m thrilled to be back in the queer love universe of Red, White & Royal Wedding,โ€ Babbit said. โ€œWe all need this kind of optimism, fantasy and gay joy.โ€

The original director, Matthew Lรณpez, who co-wrote the first film’s adaptation, is still heavily involved. He is returning to co-write the sequel’s script with the original novel’s author, Casey McQuiston, and writer Gemma Burgess. Lรณpez expressed his confidence in Babbit, noting her “vision and sense of humor will be a perfect match for our film.”

What the Story Might Explore

While the full plot is under wraps, the title Red, White & Royal Wedding strongly suggests a walk down the aisle for Alex and Henry. Author and co-writer Casey McQuiston offered a vague but enticing tease of the story’s direction earlier this year.

McQuiston described the sequel as a โ€œglimpse into Alex and Henryโ€™s life after the confetti has finished falling from the first movie,โ€ and explored the challenges of building a life together as two adults in a serious partnership. They hinted the film will deal with โ€œpressures and expectations and dreams that might be coming into conflict with each other, and things that might be pulling them and pushing them in different directions and how they navigate that together.โ€

Who is Returning for the Sequel

The core romantic duo will be back on screen, with Nicholas Galitzine returning as Prince Henry. The production also confirmed that Uma Thurman will reprise her role as President Ellen Claremont, and Sarah Shahi will return as Zarah Bankston.

Behind the scenes, producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Schechter Films are back, alongside Jennifer Salke.

As of now, Amazon MGM Studios has not announced an official release date for Red, White & Royal Wedding.
