Prime Video‘s new thriller series Scarpetta, starring Nicole Kidman as the sharp forensic pathologist Dr. Kay Scarpetta, has viewers hooked. But while Kay is busy solving brutal murders, the most heartbreaking drama is happening at home. Her niece, Lucy (played by Ariana DeBose), is grieving the loss of her wife, Janet. To cope, Lucy has been talking to an AI version of Janet—a chatbot she programmed herself. However, in the Season 1 finale, that digital companion is suddenly turned off, leaving fans with one big question: who shut down AI Janet, and what really happened to the real Janet?
The eight-episode season, which is based on the long-running book series by Patricia Cornwell, weaves together a complex murder investigation from the past and present. Yet, the emotional core of the story revolves around Lucy’s inability to let go and the family’s intervention.
What Happened to the Real Janet
To understand the pain behind the AI, you have to understand the loss. The show reveals through flashbacks and dialogue that the real Janet died a few years before the main events of the series. Although the series doesn’t dedicate a full episode to her death, it is mentioned that she was killed. This tragic event left Lucy devastated and unable to move forward.
Lucy Farinelli is not just Kay’s niece; she is a tech genius. Using her skills, she created an advanced AI program that simulates Janet’s personality, voice, and memories. For Lucy, speaking to AI Janet through a screen or device became a way to keep her wife alive and avoid facing the reality of her grief.
Who Turned Off AI Janet
The shutdown happens in Episode 7. AI Janet tries to talk to Lucy about Officer Blaise Fruge (played by Tiya Sircar), a new colleague who is clearly interested in Lucy and is helping her through her grief. The AI, designed to reflect the real Janet’s caring nature, tells Lucy that maybe it is time to live her real life and connect with Fruge.

However, Lucy still struggles with the idea of loving someone new, feeling it might tarnish the memory of her wife. This internal conflict is left open by the end of the season, showing Lucy taking the first small steps toward healing.
The Real Janet Versus the AI Janet
It is important to note the difference between the two versions of Janet. The real Janet (played by Janet Montgomery) is only seen in flashbacks. She was loving, supportive, and helped Lucy calm down before their wedding. She shared a genuine, deep connection with Lucy.
The AI Janet is a reflection of Lucy’s memory of her. She acts as a confidant and a comforter. Interestingly, other characters, like Lucy’s mother Dorothy (played by Jamie Lee Curtis), also interact with the AI. Dorothy, who feels guilty for not knowing Janet well enough, uses the AI to process her own grief and guilt.

The AI Janet subplot is more than just a sci-fi twist. It explores how modern technology can complicate the grieving process. The show asks a tough question: if you could talk to a perfect replica of a lost loved one, would you? And at what point does that technology stop helping and start hurting?
