The beloved musical comedy Schmigadoon!, which charmed audiences on Apple TV+, is getting a new life. Two years after the streaming series concluded, producers have announced that the show is being adapted for the Broadway stage, offering fans a new way to visit its magical world.
The Schmigadoon! stage musical is scheduled to begin performances at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre on April 4, 2026, with an official opening night set for April 20, 2026. The production will run for a limited engagement, concluding on September 6, 2026. This transition comes after the television series aired its second season in 2023 and was not renewed for a third.
The stage version is based on the first season of the Apple TV+ show. It follows the story of New York doctors Josh and Melissa, a couple who embark on a backpacking retreat to save their relationship. They accidentally stumble into the magical town of Schmigadoon, a place that exists as a Golden Age musical come to life. The townspeople constantly burst into song, and the couple discovers the only way to leave is by finding true love.
Key Details for Theatergoers
Tickets for the Broadway run will become available to the public on Tuesday, October 15, 2025, at 10:00 AM ET. The musical features a book and score by Cinco Paul, the creator of the original series. The production is being led by producer Lorne Michaels, who also served as an executive producer on the television series.
Michaels described the project as a “love letter to the Golden Age of movie musicals,” adding, “It’s a little bit nostalgic and a lot of fun. We’re very excited to bring it to Broadway.”
The stage adaptation includes all the songs from the series’ first season, which earned an Emmy Award for its music, plus some new numbers written specifically for the stage. The show had its world premiere at The Kennedy Center’s Eisenhower Theater in Washington, D.C., earlier in 2025, where it was met with a positive response.
The Original Series and Its Legacy
The Schmigadoon! television series premiered on Apple TV+ in July 2021. It starred Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong as the lead couple, Josh and Melissa. The show was celebrated for its clever and loving parody of classic musicals. The first season paid homage to Golden Age shows like Oklahoma! and The Music Man, while the second season, titled Schmicago, shifted to darker 1960s and 70s musicals like Chicago and Cabaret.
While the core cast for the Broadway production has not yet been announced, the successful run at The Kennedy Center featured actors like Alex Brightman and Sara Chase in the lead roles. It also saw Ann Harada reprising her role as Florence Menlove from the television series.
For fans who want to relive the original adventure or discover it for the first time, both seasons of Schmigadoon! are available to stream on Apple TV+.
