The employees of Lumon Industries are back for another shift. The second season of Apple TV’s award-winning thriller Severance arrived on January 17, 2025, picking up right where the shocking first season left off. With the main characters’ “innie” and “outie” selves now aware of each other’s existence, the show’s unique cast of charactersโboth returning and newโdrove the mystery deeper into the eerie corridors of the corporate labyrinth. Here is your guide to the people, both in front of and behind the severance barrier, who make this show a standout.
The Returning Macrodata Refinement Team
At the heart of the story is the small, rebellious team from the Macrodata Refinement (MDR) department, whose actions in the Season 1 finale changed everything.
Adam Scott leads as Mark Scout, a man divided by grief and a mysterious corporate procedure. His “outie” self chose severance to escape the pain of his wife’s death, while his “innie,” Mark S., now struggles with the revelation that his wife, Gemma, is actually alive and working at Lumon as Ms. Casey. Scott, known for Parks and Recreation, portrays both the numb sadness of the outie and the determined confusion of the innie with gripping clarity.
Britt Lower returns as Helly R., whose rebellious innie made relentless attempts to quit in Season 1. The finale’s huge twist revealed her outie is Helena Eagan, the daughter of Lumon’s powerful CEO, Jame Eagan. Season 2 explores the fallout from her public declaration that severance is a lie, complicating the dynamic between her privileged outie and suffering innie.
Completing the MDR team are John Turturro as rule-follower Irving Bailiff and Zach Cherry as perk-loving Dylan George. Irving’s journey involves his heartfelt connection with Burt from Optics and Design and the discovery that Burt’s outie is married to another man. Dylan, who heroically operated the “Overtime Contingency” switch in the finale, is driven by the knowledge that his outie has a family he cannot remember.
The Managers and Enforcers of Lumon
Lumon’s unsettling corporate culture is enforced by a group of memorable, often terrifying, figures.
Tramell Tillman is back as the intensely calm yet threatening Seth Milchick. In Season 2, he is promoted to head of the severed floor after the ousting of his former boss. His job is to surveil and control the MDR team, a task that constantly tests his composed exterior.
That former boss is Harmony Cobel, played by Patricia Arquette. Fired in the Season 1 finale for failing to contain the innies’ rebellion, the devoutly loyal Cobel continues her obsession with Mark from outside the company. She famously led a double life as Mark’s peculiar neighbor, Mrs. Selvig, a role Arquette fills with unnerving precision.
New to the management tier is Sarah Bock as Miss Huang, the young and disconcertingly direct new deputy manager. When a character asks why she seems so young, she simply replies, “Because of when I was born”. The role is a major debut for the 18-year-old actor.
Key Figures Inside and Outside the Office
The web of characters extends beyond the severed floor, connecting the corporate mystery to personal lives.
Dichen Lachman plays the dual role of Gemma Scout, Mark’s presumed-dead wife, and her innie, the serene wellness counselor Ms. Casey. After being fired and sent to the Testing Floor, her fate and the mystery of how she became an employee became central to Season 2’s plot.
Jen Tullock and Michael Chernus return as Mark’s supportive sister, Devon Scout-Hale, and her husband, the eccentric self-help author Ricken Hale. Ricken’s book, The You You Are, accidentally smuggled into Lumon, became an inspirational text for the innies seeking freedom.
Christopher Walken plays Burt Goodman, the retired head of the Optics and Design department who shared a romantic connection with Irving. Season 2 introduces John Noble as Fields, Burt’s outie husband, adding emotional complexity to Irving’s journey.
Also entering the story is Merritt Wever as Gretchen, the wife of Dylan’s outie. She meets Dylan’s innie in a special visitation room, revealing details about their family life outside Lumon.
New Faces and Mysterious Forces
Season 2 expanded the world of Lumon with several notable new characters who deepened the conspiracy.
Gwendoline Christie joined the cast as Lorne, a supervisor in the mysterious “Mammalians Nurturable” department, which cares for the goats seen in Season 1. Her character becomes an unlikely ally to Mark and Helly.
รlafur Darri รlafsson portrays Mr. Drummond, a stern Lumon security chief often seen alongside Helena Eagan. He represents a new layer of corporate authority overseeing Milchick’s work.
The eerie Testing Floor, where Gemma is held, is staffed by Robby Benson as the creepy Dr. Mauer and Sandra Bernhard as the sinister Nurse Cecily. Their roles in Lumon’s experiments became clearer as the season progressed.
The season also introduced new severed employees in the MDR department, including Alia Shawkat as Gwendolyn Y. and Bob Balaban as Mark W., who arrived from other Lumon branches.
