The third season of the Apple TV+ comedy-drama Shrinking delivered one of its most tense episodes yet with “The Bodyguard of Sadness,” the penultimate chapter of the season. While the episode centered on Alice’s (Lukita Maxwell) high school graduation—a milestone meant for celebration—it was Jimmy’s (Jason Segel) emotional breakdown that stole the spotlight. His anger, misplaced and years in the making, finally erupted during the graduation party, leaving his mentor Paul (Harrison Ford) on the receiving end of a long-overdue confrontation.
The episode, which aired on April 1, 2026, forces the characters to confront the fact that healing is rarely a straight line. As everyone around him prepares for major life changes, Jimmy finds himself regressing into old patterns rooted in his father’s abandonment, proving that even a therapist can struggle to manage his own emotions when faced with loss.
A Graduation Marked by Family Tension
The core event of Episode 10 is Alice’s graduation. It is supposed to be a happy occasion, but for Jimmy, it represents another person leaving his life. Earlier in the season, Alice announced her plans to move across the country for college, a decision that has left Jimmy feeling isolated. The day is complicated further by the arrival of his father, Randy (Jeff Daniels).
Randy continues to show his emotional distance throughout the episode. When Alice introduces her two grandfather figures—Randy as “Happy Grandpa” and Paul as “Grumpy Grandpa”—the difference in their substance becomes clear. While Paul has been a constant source of support, Randy remains a surface-level presence. The tension peaks when Randy decides to skip Alice’s graduation to go on a fishing trip, telling Jimmy that Alice “will be fine” and that he isn’t “that person.”
This moment reignites Jimmy’s childhood feelings of neglect. As he watches his father leave, the old wounds open up, setting the stage for the explosion to come later that evening.
The Explosion: Jimmy Turns on Paul
The graduation party brings everyone together. Paul, who has been a steady mentor to Jimmy throughout the series, is preparing to move to Connecticut with his wife Julie (Wendie Malick). During the party, Paul makes a seemingly innocent comment about emotions, telling Alice that not everyone is as “sensitive” as her father. For Jimmy, the word “sensitive” triggers a direct association with his father Randy’s earlier dismissal.
What follows is a raw and uncomfortable confrontation. Jimmy unloads years of frustration onto Paul. He reveals that he slept with Meg (Lily Rabe) and expresses his hurt that Paul gave the therapy practice to Gaby (Jessica Williams) without even consulting him. He admits that he resents learning about Paul’s retirement through someone else. The outburst is messy, painful, and deeply human.
Jimmy insists the feelings are for both. He does not believe he means as much to Paul as Paul means to him, and he feels foolish for not realising it sooner.
Harrison Ford and Jason Segel deliver some of their best performances in this scene, capturing the awkwardness of a mentor-mentee relationship fracturing under the weight of unspoken expectations. Paul recognizes that Jimmy is projecting feelings meant for Randy onto him, but by then the damage is already done.
Sean and Jorge Find a Way Forward
While Jimmy’s story takes a dark turn, other characters experience growth in Episode 10. Sean (Luke Tennie) and Jorge (Trey Santiago-Hudson) have been at odds since Sean closed their food truck business. Their conflict escalates to a physical fight in a boxing ring, where Sean accidentally knocks out one of Jorge’s teeth. It’s a messy scene, but it leads to a surprising resolution.
Derek (Ted McGinley) steps in to help. After his own health scare earlier in the season, Derek has been reevaluating his priorities. He offers Sean a rent-free house in exchange for overseeing repairs, but with one condition: Sean must let Jorge move in with him. The gesture forces Sean to reconcile with his friend, proving that sometimes growth comes from making sacrifices for the people you care about.

Family Chaos and New Beginnings
Elsewhere in the episode, Liz (Christa Miller) and Derek receive shocking news: their son Will’s girlfriend is pregnant. The couple reacts very differently to the news. Liz embraces the idea of becoming a grandmother, while Derek resists. He wants to travel and enjoy his later years without the responsibility of raising another child. Their argument highlights the different ways people approach aging and family obligations.
Meanwhile, Brian (Michael Urie) faces a similar crossroads. His husband Charlie (Devin Kawaoka) has a job opportunity in Tennessee. Brian initially refuses to go, hiding behind work commitments. However, after seeing Sean make a sacrifice for Jorge, Brian has a change of heart and decides to join Charlie, recognizing what matters most in his life.
The episode ends on a somber note. The morning after the party, Paul messages Jimmy to say his car is waiting, asking Jimmy to come say goodbye. Jimmy does not show up. As the screen fades, Jimmy sits alone in his house, having pushed away one of the few people who truly cared about him.
