Lawrence took to social media to explain what is happening with the show. The news comes as the Season 3 finale prepares to air, which officially ends the story the writers originally planned.
The creator admitted that moving into a fourth season with a new direction feels both scary and risky, but he is excited about the challenge.
The Three Season Story Is Ending as Planned
When Shrinking first started, Lawrence and his team had a clear vision. They planned a three-season story that focused on grief, forgiveness, and moving forward. That plan is now reaching its end with the Season 3 finale.
Lawrence wrote on X, “Season finale and end of this three season story next week. Hope you dig it. (Excited to start completely new story next year. Feels scary/risky/fun).”
He explained further to a fan, “We always pitched a three season story on #Shrinking grief-forgiveness-moving forward. We wanted to stay true to that and end the way we planned. (So excited to do Season 4 and a new story with the same cast.)”
The creative team did not want to stretch out the original arc just because the show got popular. They decided to finish what they started and then begin something new.
Same Cast, Different Direction
Despite the story change, the actors are all coming back. Lawrence made this very clear in his posts, saying that Shrinking Season 4 will feature the exact same cast.
He wrote, “there is a Season 4 with the EXACT same cast (that’s why we are doing it, we love each other).”
This means viewers will still see Jason Segel as Jimmy, Harrison Ford as Paul, Jessica Williams as Gaby, Christa Miller as Liz, Ted McGinley as Derek, Luke Tennie as Sean, Lukita Maxwell as Alice, and Michael Urie as Brian.
The characters may be the same, but the situations they face will be entirely different from what came before.
Why the Change Makes Sense for the Show
Lawrence explained his thinking behind the decision to start fresh. He said that keeping the same story going would not make sense for the characters.
He told Deadline, “The same way that Shrinking, if the fourth season started and Jason Segel woke up and went, ‘you know I’ve been thinking about it, and I was still super sad about my wife,’ everybody would be like, What are you doing? We saw that already.”
The creator pointed out that the team has already told many stories with these actors. He said, “We have a new story to tell, and that’ll either be, two- or three-season story or it won’t. I never find that stuff daunting.”
This approach is similar to what Lawrence is doing with Ted Lasso, which is also coming back for a fourth season with a new direction.
