The relocation to North Carolina marks a major life change for Mykelti, her husband Tony Padron, and their three children. A Mother’s Emotional Goodbye
Christine Brown was seen helping her daughter pack, becoming emotional as she discussed the move. “Mykelti’s moving tomorrow. We’re driving her and her kids cross-country tomorrow. Mykelti acknowledged her mother’s sadness, stating, “Every time I talk about moving to my mom, I break her heart just a little bit more. She’s really sad. She’s really heartbroken.” The close bond between mother and daughter was evident during the heartfelt goodbye.
The Reasons Behind the Relocation
Mykelti and her family moved from Utah to Charlotte, North Carolina, for both professional and personal reasons. Her husband, Tony Padron, is a professional chess player, and Charlotte is considered the chess hub of the United States. Tony explained his excitement, calling Charlotte “the chess capital of the U.S.” He noted, “I’m someone who works in chess, makes content, and teaches and coaches. For me, moving out there is so exciting because that’s like the hub.” The city’s Charlotte Chess Center hosts major tournaments and events, making it the ideal place for Tony to advance his career.
Beyond the career move, the change of scenery offers a new beginning for the family. Mykelti described her enthusiasm for the “change, the difference, the opportunity.” She added, “There’s a lot of opportunity out here.” Their new home on a quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac provides a different environment from their previous residence, offering more space for their children to play and grow.
Escaping Family Exhaustion
While new opportunities are a big draw, Christine Brown revealed a deeper, more personal reason for her daughter’s move. She stated that Mykelti is “just exhausted from trying so hard to get everybody back together again.” For years, viewers have seen Mykelti attempt to mend fractured relationships within the polygamist family. Christine elaborated, “Mykelti tried so hard to get the whole family back together again. She really wanted to. There’s a lot of hurt feelings and frustration and anger and resentment.”
The Brown family has experienced significant public breakdowns. Kody Brown was once in a plural marriage with four women—Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn. However, the three original wives have since left him, leaving Robyn as his only remaining wife. This dissolution has created strained relationships across the entire family. In the recent episode, Kody himself acknowledged the tension, saying, “I think most of the relationships between me and my adult children are strained. It’s an issue of trash talk and innuendo, and it has challenged loyalties and trust on all sides.” Mykelti’s efforts to fix these dynamics ultimately proved unsuccessful, contributing to her decision to physically distance herself from the situation.
Christine reflected on the sad outcome, saying, “The whole thing’s just been sad. The relationship with them is just not what Mykelti hoped it would be.” This family turmoil was a key factor in Mykelti’s choice to seek a fresh start on the other side of the country. Despite telling her father about the move and inviting him to visit before she left, a meeting did not happen. Kody cited conflicting schedules as the reason, saying, “Tony and Mykelti’s schedule kept advancing… we just never were able to make contact.”
A New Chapter in North Carolina
Now settled in North Carolina, Mykelti is looking forward to this new chapter. She said, “I am stoked. I’m super excited. Oh, I’m way ready.” The relocation brings her family closer to her sister, Maddie Brush, who lives about four hours away. This will allow their children to grow up near cousins, something Mykelti values. The move allows Tony to immediately focus on his chess career while Mykelti plans to relaunch her own professional aspirations. The family is united in building a new home life filled with love and shared goals, leaving the past struggles behind.
