Song Seung Heon recently opened up about why his past relationships didn’t work out, blaming his habit of choosing time with friends over his girlfriends. The actor shared his honest thoughts during an interview on the YouTube show Ddeun Ddeun with host Yoo Jae Suk on August 2, 2025.
Song Seung Heon’s Conflict-Avoidant Personality
During the show’s “conflict type” segment, Song Seung Heon took a personality test and admitted he avoids arguments.
“If I argue with my girlfriend one day and meet her the next, I’ll just act like nothing happened. But she’s still upset, and she ends up thinking, ‘What’s wrong with this guy?’”
This approach often made things worse, as his partners felt ignored. Yoo Jae Suk pointed out that avoiding fights doesn’t solve problems—it just delays them.
Why His Friends Mean So Much to Him
When asked when he feels happiest, Song Seung Heon didn’t hesitate.
“When I hang out with my middle and high school friends. They don’t treat me like a celebrity. I feel like I can just be myself around them.”
He explained that most of his friends are now married, so their meet-ups are rare and special. However, this closeness with his friends became a major issue in his relationships.
How His Girlfriends Reacted
Song Seung Heon revealed that his past girlfriends often felt neglected.
“Whenever I had a girlfriend, she’d ask, ‘Why do you like your friends more than me?’ I just wanted her to join me when I hung out with them. But eventually, she’d say, ‘Why did we always have to be with your friends?’ That caused a lot of fights.”
Yoo Jae Suk gave him a reality check, saying:
“When your girlfriend seems to get along with your friends, you might think she’s enjoying it too. But actually, it’s just you feeling comfortable—you’re not thinking about how she feels.”
Did He Learn His Lesson?
Yoo Jae Suk jokingly asked if he would change his ways if he got into a new relationship. Song Seung Heon laughed and replied:
“I guess I’ll just stop seeing my friends.”
The moment was lighthearted, but it highlighted a real issue in his past relationships. Fans found the conversation relatable, showing that even celebrities struggle with balancing love and friendships.
Song Seung Heon’s Longtime Friendship with So Ji-sub
While his romantic relationships faced challenges, Song Seung Heon has maintained a strong friendship with fellow actor So Ji-sub for over 20 years. They met in the late 1990s as models in a jeans competition before becoming actors.
“A friend I’ve known even before we became celebrities. Over the past twenty years, the two of us have become as close as brothers.”
So Ji-sub once said he only follows Song Seung Heon on Instagram, calling him a “precious person.” Fans admire their bond, which has stayed strong despite their busy careers.
Past Relationships and Marriage Thoughts
Song Seung Heon was previously in a public relationship with Chinese actress Liu Yifei from 2015 to 2018. They met while filming The Third Way of Love and dated for nearly three years before breaking up.
In past interviews, he has expressed his desire to marry and start a family.
“It’s my dream to have a happy family after marriage. Although I can withstand criticism, I dream of being a great father more than a great actor.”
However, he admitted that his friends’ married lives make him rethink timing.
“I’m really envious of my friends who have wives and children. But when I ask them, nine out of ten say it’s good to get married, but they also tell me to do it slowly.”
How Fans Reacted
Many fans found his honesty refreshing.
“It’s so relatable! Even celebrities struggle with balancing love and friendships.”
