Sophie Turner and Kit Harington, who played siblings Sansa Stark and Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, are reuniting as lovers in a new gothic horror film called The Dreadful. Turner admits the experience feels “really weird” after years of portraying brother and sister on the hit HBO series.
The film, set during the 15th-century War of the Roses, follows Anne (Turner) and her mother-in-law Morwen (Marcia Gay Harden) as their isolated lives are disrupted by the return of a man from their past (Harington). The reunion brings unexpected tension and dark secrets to the surface.
From Siblings to Lovers in The Dreadful
Turner and Harington spent eight seasons as part of the Stark family in Game of Thrones, making their new romantic dynamic in The Dreadful a strange shift.
“I did a movie last year which Iโm really excited about with my old but very good friend Kit Harington, who played my brother on Game of Thrones,” Turner told Vogue. “Weโre doing a gothic horror, but we play lovers. Sorry, guys. Itโs really weird for all of us.”
Despite the awkwardness, Turner was the one who suggested Harington for the role.
“They were trying to find someone for that role, and I was like, ‘You canโt not have Kit,’” she told The Sunday Times. “Itโs set around the time of the Wars of the Roses, so weโll probably be floating about in robes on clifftops again.”
Fan Reactions to the Unusual Reunion
Fans of Game of Thrones are no strangers to complicated relationshipsโJon Snow himself had a romantic storyline with his aunt, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). Still, seeing Sansa and Jon as lovers is an unexpected twist.
Back in 2016, Turner joked about the idea of romantic scenes with Harington, saying:
“I could not do that with Kit. Thereโs no way I could do those kind of scenes with KitโIโd laugh way too much.”
Now, nearly a decade later, the two are doing just thatโthough Turner still finds it amusing.
What We Know About The Dreadful
Directed by Natasha Kermani, The Dreadful is a gothic horror film with historical elements. The story is inspired by the Wars of the Roses, the same conflict that influenced George R.R. Martinโs A Song of Ice and Fire books.
- Cast: Sophie Turner as Anne, Kit Harington as Jago, Marcia Gay Harden as Morwen.
- Setting: 15th-century England, during a time of civil war.
- Plot: Anne and her mother-in-law live in isolation until a man from their past returns, changing everything.
The film wrapped production last year but does not yet have a release date.
Turner and Haringtonโs Off-Screen Friendship
Despite the odd on-screen transition, Turner and Harington have remained close friends since Game of Thrones. Harington once described their bond as sibling-like, saying:
“The thing about Sophie, Maisie [Williams], Isaac [Hempstead-Wright], and me is that we were together for so longโฆ We became like actual siblings. We would literally fight each other.”
This makes their new roles as lovers even more unusualโbut also highlights their versatility as actors.
Whatโs Next for Sophie Turner?
Besides The Dreadful, Turner has several projects in the works. She will star as Lara Croft in an upcoming Tomb Raider series for Amazon Prime Video, written by Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She is also set to appear in the thriller Trust and the drama Steal.
As for The Dreadful, fans will have to wait for more updatesโbut one thing is certain: seeing Sansa and Jon in a romantic storyline will be a surreal experience.
