What Happened Before and What’s Next
The story of House of Ashur explores an alternate history where the cunning former slave Ashur did not die. Instead, he was rewarded for his betrayal of Spartacus and given ownership of the very gladiator school, or ludus, he once served in. His goal is to build a grand spectacle to gain power and favor with Rome’s elite.
His key to success is Achillia, a fierce Nubian warrior he trains to become a revolutionary female gladiator. Their ambitions have drawn the attention of powerful Romans, including a manipulative Julius Caesar, who arrived in the previous episode.
Episode 5, “Goddess of Death,” featured Achillia’s long-awaited first fight in the arena. Facing a hostile crowd and a last-minute change by Senator Gabinius, she fought a massive male gladiator instead of the planned dwarf brothers. Using her speed and skill, Achillia won a brutal and shocking victory, finally earning the respect of the crowd and her fellow gladiators.
Episode 6, “Empty Things,” is expected to focus on the fallout from this success. A press release from STARZ hints that Ashur’s popularity in Capua will rise, but it will come at a “horrific cost”. Early previews suggest the tone will be darker and more political, dealing with the personal price of ambition.
“The spoiler informationโฆ is telling us that Ashur’s popularity over in Capua is going to riseโฆ However, when it does, a horrific cost will be paid for it!”
The episode is directed by Debs Paterson and written by Eliana Pipes.
