Voice actor Sam Witwer, who has played Darth Maul for nearly two decades, is making a big claim about the upcoming animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. He says this new show is unlike anything Lucasfilm Animation has made before. With the show set to debut in just days on Disney+, Witwer and the creative team are explaining why fans should expect a fresh, edgier take on the galaxy far, far away.
The series drops on April 6, 2026, picking up the story of Maul after the fall of the Republic. Witwer, known for bringing the character to life in The Clone Wars and Rebels, explains that Shadow Lord pushes into new territory for the franchise. The show is not trying to make Maul a hero. Instead, it offers a close look inside the mind of a broken villain trying to find his place in an Empire that left him behind.
Sam Witwer Explains the Darker, More Personal Maul Story
Witwer recently shared details about how different this version of Maul feels. He notes that the character is at his most uncertain point ever. After losing his brother Savage Opress and being rejected by his master Darth Sidious, Maul must figure out his own path.
“It was harder than I thought it would be. You would think you’d just jump in and start playing the character, but it took a lot more forethought, a lot more discussion with Brad Rau and Matt Michnovetz to figure it out. We’re going to get inside his head in a deeper way.”
Witwer points out that the show asks a tough question. How do you keep the moral center of Star Wars while telling a story from a villain’s point of view? The answer lies in the show’s setting. Maul is not fighting for good. He is fighting against the Empire for revenge. Witwer describes the show as “bad guys versus worse guys.” This small change makes the whole story feel new.
The actor also highlights that Maul starts to see the Jedi differently. Sidious trained Maul to hate the Jedi. But now, with the Jedi gone and the Empire in control, Maul realizes the Jedi were not the real enemy.
“Now that I’ve seen the alternative and they’re all gone, boy, I’d rather deal with them than the alternative. The alternative is terrifying and soulless. The Inquisitors have no principles. They’re like black holes.”
A New Art Style That Uses Real Paint on Glass
The visual look of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is also a major change from past shows. Supervising Director Brad Rau says this was the hardest show the team has ever made. But he believes it is also the best-looking one. The team used a special method that mixes computer animation with real painted art.
Rau explains that the show includes actual brush strokes on physical glass. The artists painted backgrounds on canvas and photographed them. Then they added those images into the computer animation. This gives the show a textured, gritty feel that matches the crime-noir story.
“We literally have brush strokes in the skin tones and in the matte paintings in the background. Some of them are literal physical matte paintings that have been photographed and comped in to create that look and feel. If you freeze-frame and you look at the smoke, you’ll see a feeling of a brush stroke.”
Producer Athena Yvette Portillo adds that the team wanted every single frame to look like a piece of art. They treated each shot as if it could be a trailer image. This attention to detail makes the planet Janix, a neon-lit crater city, feel alive and dangerous. Witwer describes the style as “more edgy and jagged and dangerous,” which fits the show’s darker tone perfectly.
Lucasfilm Already Confirms Season 2 Before Premiere
Even before the first episode airs, Lucasfilm has shown strong confidence in the project. Disney has already renewed Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord for Season 2. This early pickup is rare for streaming shows. It shows that the company sees Maul as a central figure for the future of Star Wars animation.
Dave Filoni, now the president of Lucasfilm, worked closely with the team. He shared that the ideas for this show go back to conversations he had with George Lucas years ago. Filoni wanted to honor the plans Lucas had for the character that never made it to the screen.
“George and I had had some talks about Maul over the years and what his plans for Maul had been. I felt it was a way of honoring that future that we were going to have and finally bringing some of it to light.”
The first season will run for 10 episodes. The release schedule is set up in weekly batches. The first two episodes drop on April 6. The final two episodes will air on May 4, also known as Star Wars Day.

Adlon describes her character’s relationship with her Jedi Master as a father-daughter bond. Devon is focused on survival and protecting her family, even if it means making morally gray choices.
The cast also includes Wagner Moura as a detective, Richard Ayoade as a droid named Two-Boots, Dennis Haysbert, and Vanessa Marshall. This mix of new and returning voices adds to the fresh feel of the series.
