Chapter 1: Calamity at Seven Skies
Red Line, Gold Hearts Chapter 1: Calamity at Seven Skies
“If you throw another piece of raw sea-king meat into my personal navigation room, Captain Caelum, I will freeze the blood inside your subclavian vein and use your corpse as an anchor.”
Captain Vespera’s voice did not rise above a crisp, razor-sharp murmur, but the air inside the ruined sanctuary of the White Sea observatory instantly dropped twenty degrees.
She stood behind a shattered marble desk, a pair of brass dividers held in one hand and a freshly inked chart of the New World’s upper currents held in the other. Her dark navy coat, pinned with pristine silver buttons that reflected the blinding sky-sun, flapped slightly against her tailored tactical gear. Silver-white hair tumbled over her shoulders, framing a face that could have been carved from high-grade alabaster—flawless, sharply angled, and completely devoid of human warmth.
Three feet away, standing over six-foot-four and practically bursting out of a sleeveless, scorched leather vest, Captain “Red-Iron” Caelum scratched the back of his neck with a hand the size of a dinner plate. His dark red hair was wild, sticking out in fiery tufts, and his amber eyes shone with a terrifying, golden light that usually made Vice Admirals void their bowels on sight.
Right now, he was holding a wooden platter piled high with sizzling, spiced sea-king ribs, wrapped neatly in clean palm leaves.
“It’s not raw, Vespera,” Caelum offered, his deep, rumbling voice sounding like boulders grinding together at the bottom of a ravine. He took a broad, confident step forward, his heavy boots crushing the white cloud-stone rubble beneath them. “I smoked it in forge-heat for six hours. You haven’t touched a plate since the Marines breached the outer reef three days ago. Your crew’s navigator said you get mean when you’re low on calories.”
“Kaito is going to spend his next off-duty cycle scraping barnacles from the keel with his bare fingernails,” Vespera hissed.
She turned her gaze—a pair of piercing sapphire eyes that had brought down three different Cipher Pol teams—directly onto Caelum. Beneath the fabric of her black leather gloves, a hum of static energy flickered. Her Devil Fruit power, the Kinetic-Kinetic Fruit: Absolute Zero Model, was already reacting to her pulse. It didn’t just generate frost; it seized momentum itself, stripping the kinetic velocity out of matter until molecules slammed to a absolute, crystalline halt.
He is too close, her mind screamed, panic instantly spiking behind her stoic expression. He is far too large, his body temperature is unacceptably high, and he is holding meat as if this were an informal tavern rather than a battle-tested command center. What is the correct social response to an unwanted offering of roasted protein from a rival captain? Threatening his life failed. Threatening his crew failed. Should I calculate his mass and throw him off the cloud-cliff?
Instead of doing any of that, Vespera rigidified her posture, pulling her chin up by half an inch. “We are in the middle of a dual-flagship salvage operation. The Frostbound Pirates do not eat ‘smoked ribs’ while securing ancient historic artifacts. I require absolute focus, precise spatial calculations, and zero thermal interference.”
“You’re shaking,” Caelum said softly.
The brawler set the heavy platter down on a unbroken stone pillar with astonishing gentleness for a man whose fists had shattered a Marine fortress in the West Blue. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small, steaming clay cup filled with dark, spiced tea. “Your fingers are white. I know you like to pretend you’re made of steel, but seizing the momentum of three marine battleships yesterday took a toll. Drink the tea. It’s sweet. I put cloud-honey in it.”
Vespera stared at the clay cup as if it were an unexploded naval mine.
He baked… he brewed tea? For me?
A violent, scorching spike of embarrassment shot straight from her chest up into her throat. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her instinct, forged through years of rigid Marine officer training and brutal scientific solitude, was to analyze, categorize, and execute a tactical counter-maneuver. But human warmth had no mathematical formula. Caelum’s massive, warm hand held the cup out toward her with zero malice, zero posturing, and an infuriatingly soft, golden-eyed expression that made her brain feel as though it were short-circuiting.
CRACK.
A sheet of jagged, crystalline ice instantly erupted from the heels of Vespera’s boots, racing across the white cloud-stone floor, traveling up the leg of the stone pillar, and encasing Caelum’s platter of smoked ribs in a six-inch-thick block of solid blue frost.
Caelum blinked, looking down at his frozen barbecue, then back up at Vespera, whose cheeks were flushed with a faint, almost invisible tinge of red.
“The… the thermal conditions of this room were unstable,” Vespera muttered, her voice dropping an octave as she pulled her coat collar tighter around her neck. “I adjusted them.”
“You froze the ribs, Vespera,” Caelum said, though there was no anger in his voice. In fact, a wide, blinding grin spread across his scarred face, revealing sharp white teeth. “That’s fine. I can melt ’em back down.”
“Do not melt them! The condensation will ruin my sea-charts!” Vespera snapped, pointing her dividers directly at his throat. “Why are you here, Caelum? Where are your commanders? Why are the Hearth-Hammer brawlers currently wrestling my tactical cartographers on the lower beach?”
“They’re not wrestling, they’re playing chicken-fight in the sky-lagoon,” Caelum corrected cheerfully, taking a slow step forward until he was standing directly across the ruined desk from her. He loomed over her, broad-shouldered and imposing, yet his posture was entirely open. “And I’m here because our scouts just spotted the white sails on the horizon.”
Vespera’s sharp, academic demeanor instantly snapped back into place like a steel trap. The awkward panic vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating mind that had earned her a nine-hundred-million-Berry bounty.
“Marines?” she asked.
“Not just Marines,” Caelum’s grin faded, replaced by the cold, dangerous edge of a man who had survived the slave-pits of Mariejois. His fiery eyes narrowed, glowing like embers in a furnace. “Three battleships. Golden lion figureheads. Advanced dreadnought hulls built to withstand cloud-pressures.”
“Vice Admiral Drake,” Vespera murmured, her eyes darting to her maps. “The ‘Iron Hound’ of the New World Fleet. He predicted our trajectory from the lower Grand Line. He knew we would both track the Rubbing of the Road Poneglyph to this sky-island.”
“He didn’t come alone,” Caelum added, his deep voice carrying a dark weight. “There’s a smaller, unmarked black schooner riding in the shadow of his main flagship. White cloaks. Golden masks.”
Vespera froze—not through her Devil Fruit, but through pure, instinctual memory. “CP0. Cipher Pol Aegis Zero.”
“Yeah,” Caelum said grimly, reaching up to rub a thick, circular scar running around his right wrist—the permanent brand left by a Celestial Dragon’s slave shackle before he had broken his own chains and burned the noble’s estate to ash. “The Government wants that red stone. And they want us dead before we can read it.”
“They are fifty minutes early,” Vespera said, her fingers flying across the maps, calculating wind speeds, cloud density, and fleet trajectories in a split second. “My flagship, the Glacial Crown, is currently undergoing hull repairs on the western reef. Her main cannons are dismounted.”
“And the Hearth’s Anvil is sitting in dry-cloud dock with half her outer plating stripped for re-tempering,” Caelum said, gritting his teeth. “Neither of our ships can take a direct broadside from a Marine Dreadnought right now, let alone a Buster Call formation.”
“Then we abandon the territory and retreat to the lower sea,” Vespera said coldly.
“We can’t,” Caelum replied, resting his massive, calloused hands on the desk and leaning in close. The heat radiating off his skin was like standing next to a blast furnace. “The Poneglyph is located in the lower vaults of The Crucible.”
Vespera paused. “The ancient vessel?”
“It’s not just a floating ruin, Vespera,” Caelum said, his amber eyes locking onto hers with absolute conviction. “My shipwrights spent the last forty-eight hours examining the superstructure beneath this island. The Crucible isn’t an island ruin. It’s a ship. An ancient, island-sized dreadnought built during the Void Century. It’s fully functional, but it’s been locked in cloud-ice for eight hundred years.”
Vespera’s mind raced through historical texts, scientific anomalies, and naval schematics. “An ancient warship… submerged in the white clouds. To move a vessel of that mass would require an engine capacity beyond modern technology.”
“Not modern technology,” Caelum said softly. He reached out, his thick fingers lightly touching the edge of the map she was holding. “My heat. Your cold. The engine room in the core of The Crucible… it has two primary drive cores. One is a thermodynamic pressure chamber that requires heat exceeding three thousand degrees. The other is a kinetic deceleration sink that requires absolute zero to lock the steering rudders and condense the cloud-steam.”
Vespera looked up at him, her sapphire eyes wide with realization. “The ship was designed to be operated by two opposing elemental forces.”
“It was designed for us,” Caelum said with a terrifying, beautiful confidence. “We drop both of our broken flagships, transfer our crews onto The Crucible, ignite the core, and break through Drake’s blockade.”
“You want us… to co-captain a single, ancient vessel?” Vespera’s voice rose slightly, a crack appearing in her impenetrable wall of ice. “Do you have any concept of the logistical nightmare that represents? Our crews hate each other! My men are disciplined tactical operatives who execute orders with mathematical precision. Your men are chaotic, unwashed brawlers who throw furniture when they get excited! We cannot coexist on a single vessel!”
“We either share a ship, Ice Queen,” Caelum said, leaning in so close she could smell the scent of woodsmoke, cinnamon, and sea-salt on his skin, “or we let CP0 take the Poneglyph and turn us into dynamic execution trophies for the World Nobles. What’s your math say about that?”
Vespera opened her mouth to shoot down his ridiculous, chaotic proposal, but before she could utter a single word, the sky above the observatory shattered.
BOOM!
A deafening, earth-shaking roar echoed through the heavens as a volley of high-caliber Marine mortar shells tore through the cloud-layer above. The roof of the ancient observatory disintegrated into dust, raining heavy cloud-stone debris down upon them.
Without a second of hesitation, Caelum moved.
He didn’t draw a weapon. He didn’t execute a complex martial arts stance. He simply threw his massive body over Vespera, wrapping his thick, leather-clad arms around her shoulders and pinning her against his chest as a multi-ton stone pillar collapsed directly onto his back.
CRASH!
A wave of intense, blazing heat exploded from Caelum’s back. Red-hot forge-flames erupted from his skin, turning his upper jacket into molten liquid. The falling stone pillar didn’t crush them—the moment it touched Caelum’s back, the intense, superheated furnace energy melted the cloud-stone into liquid slag, which cascaded around them like a curtain of glowing orange lava.
Vespera was trapped against his chest.
She could feel the rock-hard wall of his muscles, the steady, booming thunder of his heartbeat against her cheek, and the overwhelming, suffocating warmth of his body. His arms wrapped around her were thick, protective iron bands, sheltering her entirely from the dust, the falling fire, and the shockwaves of the Marine bombardment.
“Are you hit?” Caelum growled into her hair, his deep voice vibrating right through her bones. His breath was warm against her ear. “Vespera. Talk to me. Did any of it touch you?”
Vespera’s brain completely ceased function.
He… he covered me. He used his own body as a shield. The kinetic impact of that pillar was approximately four thousand kilograms. He melted solid stone with his back to keep a single pebble from touching my head.
“I… I am…” Vespera stammered, her voice stripped of all cold authority, sounding small, breathless, and intensely human. Her hands, pushed up against his warm chest, instinctively clenched into the leather of his vest. “I am… undamaged. Release me at once, Captain Caelum!”
“Good,” Caelum exhaled, completely ignoring her order to release her. Instead, he turned his head toward the broken sky-wall, his golden eyes blazing with a terrifying, bloodthirsty fury that instantly replaced his gentle demeanor. “Drake’s firing early. They aren’t trying to capture us. They’re trying to sink the island.”
“Caelum! Release me!” Vespera barked, her cheeks burning with such intense heat that her Devil Fruit flared out of control.
FROOSH!
A violent wave of absolute zero kinetic energy burst outward from her body. The molten slag floating around them was instantly frozen mid-drip, transforming into an intricate, twisted sculpture of glowing, frozen glass and black ice. The air temperature plummeted so rapidly that Caelum’s furnace-flames flickered and died, leaving his bare, muscular shoulders covered in a thin dusting of delicate frost.
Caelum stepped back, shaking his shoulders like a giant wet dog, sending frost crystals flying. He looked down at her with a look of absolute, awe-struck wonder.
“Damn, Vespera,” he chuckled, his terrifying golden eyes suddenly soft again. “You really are incredible.”
Vespera straightened her navy coat with frantic, precise snaps of her wrists, desperately trying to reassemble her shattered dignity. Her heart was beating so fast she was certain he could hear it. “That was… a tactical temperature dispersion. Nothing more. Do not touch me without prior verbal authorization.”
“Noted,” Caelum smiled, reaching out and casually grabbing his frozen platter of ribs from the ice-sculpture, tucking it under his arm like a football. “Now come on. Let’s go steal an ancient ship.”
The sky-island’s outer harbor was a warzone.
Three massive Marine battleships, their grand white sails bearing the blue seagull crest and iron-clad hulls bristling with heavy artillery, had broken through the lower cloud-banks. High-explosive artillery shells rained down on the white-sand beaches, shattering the sky-palms and setting the cloud-docks ablaze.
On the western reef, the Glacial Crown—Vespera’s sleek, dark-blue flagship—was already listing heavily, her main mast snapped in half by a direct hit from a marine mortar. On the opposite side of the bay, the Hearth’s Anvil, Caelum’s massive, iron-reinforced galleon, was surrounded by Marine boarding craft, her deck a roaring inferno of red flame and gunsmoke.
“Captain!”
A tall, slender man with pale skin, dark circle-framed glasses, and a long feather quill tucked behind his ear came sprinting through the burning cloud-rubble. He was holding a leather-bound logbook tightly against his chest, his eyes wide with panic. It was Kaito, Chief Navigator of the Frostbound Pirates.
“Kaito! Report!” Vespera ordered, stepping forward as her dark coat billowed in the hot wind.
“The Marine fleet is under the direct command of Vice Admiral Drake!” Kaito shouted over the deafening roar of cannon fire. “They’ve deployed three squads of Pacifista units along the shore! Our crews have formed a joint defensive perimeter near the central vault, but we’re being pushed back! And—” Kaito paused, looking back and forth between Vespera and Caelum, his eyes lingering on the tiny specks of frost still clinging to Caelum’s shoulders. He pulled out his quill and rapidly scribbled a note in his logbook. “Observation 402: Captain’s aura is currently hyper-agitated; local ambient temperature down twelve degrees; Captain Caelum smells of cinnamon and soot.“
“Kaito, if you write one more word in that ridiculous diary, I will execute you for high treason!” Vespera snapped, her ice-blue eyes flashing dangerously.
“It’s a historical log, Captain!” Kaito defended himself smoothly, slipping the book into his coat. “More importantly, the Hearth-Hammer brawlers and our tacticians are currently arguing over who gets to carry the medical supplies onto the central vessel!”
“Barnaby!” Caelum roared, his deep voice carrying over the sound of exploding artillery.
From the smoke near the beach, a giant of a man with a wild red beard, a chef’s toque tilted precariously on his head, and a massive iron cleaver strapped to his back came bursting out. He was carrying three full barrels of flour under one arm and a wounded Frostbound sniper under the other.
“Captain!” Barnaby yelled back, skidding to a halt. “We’re securing the lower deck of the big ancient tub! But these cold-faced eggheads of hers keep telling me I can’t set up my brick oven in the main hold because of ‘structural weight distribution’!”
“Tell them to shove their weight distribution!” Caelum shouted back with a grin. “Set the oven up near the main forge! We’re going to be baking for two crews now!”
“Understood, Boss!” Barnaby roared, tossing the wounded sniper gently to a Frostbound combat medic. “Hey, Ice-lady’s captain! My boss made you some ribs! Did you like ’em? He spent three hours adjusting the wood-chips so they wouldn’t hurt your delicate stomach!”
Vespera’s entire body went rigid. “I… I did not requested… my stomach is perfectly resilient!” she spluttered, her social composure utterly disintegrating once again. “Caelum, control your cook!”
“He’s a passionate man, Vespera,” Caelum chuckled, grabbing her by the elbow—a gentle, natural gesture that made Vespera’s brain short-circuit for the third time in ten minutes—and pulling her toward the massive, shadowy crater at the center of the island. “We’re out of time. Drake’s flagship is moving into firing position.”
They crested the edge of the crater, and Vespera’s breath caught in her throat.
Resting in the deep, cloud-filled abyss below was The Crucible.
It was not merely a ship; it was a floating fortress. Over eight hundred meters from bow to stern, its dark, black-steel hull was covered in ancient, glowing golden runes that flickered weakly beneath centuries of packed sky-ice. Its bow was carved in the shape of two intertwined dragons—one forged from dark, abyssal steel, the other from shimmering, translucent crystal. The ship lacked traditional sails; instead, massive, mechanical iron wings flared from its sides, designed to catch high-altitude sky-currents.
“It’s beautiful,” Vespera whispered, her analytical mind overwhelmed by the shear scale of the Void Century engineering before her. “The structural geometry… it’s flawless. It defies modern fluid dynamics.”
“It’s our new home,” Caelum said softly, looking down at her with a gentle smirk. “Ready to go turn the key?”
Before Vespera could respond, a sudden, blinding flash of light cut through the storm clouds above.
SWOOSH!
A massive wave of compressed air, hardened with dark, obsidian Armament Haki, tore through the sky, slicing through the top of a cloud-cliff and raining hundreds of tons of rock down toward the entrance of The Crucible’s lower deck.
Vespera and Caelum both moved instantaneously.
Caelum stepped forward, his body swelling as his fiery Conqueror’s Haki flared outward in a golden aura. He drew his right fist back, his skin turning a deep, molten red, radiating heat so intense that the air around his arm distorted into visible shimmering waves.
“Red Iron Forge: Vulcan Hammer!” Caelum roared, driving his fist upward into the falling rock avalanche.
A massive column of superheated, molten metal and red fire shot from his fist, smashing into the falling rocks and instantly vaporizing the stone into ash and liquid glass before it could touch their approaching crews.
Simultaneously, Vespera leaped into the air, her dark coat flying behind her like the wings of a predatory raven. Her sapphire eyes shone with a cold, terrifying light as she expanded her Observation Haki, pinpointing the source of the attack high above on the Marine flagship’s deck.
She drew her two long, narrow rapier-style blades, crossing them in front of her face.
“Absolute Zero: Kinetic Freeze—Glacier Wall!“
Vespera slashed her blades through the empty air. The kinetic energy of the blowing gale-force winds, the airborne moisture, and the incoming Marine artillery shells instantly seized. Millions of air molecules stopped moving entirely, freezing into a colossal, three-hundred-foot shield of solid, unbreakable ice that locked into place mid-air, completely blocking the Marine fleet’s line of sight and protecting The Crucible’s deck.
She landed lightly on the wooden railing of The Crucible, her landing so soft and precise it didn’t leave a single mark on the ancient wood.
Caelum dropped down beside her with a heavy, thunderous THUD, his boots scorching the railing slightly before he caught his balance. He looked back up at the sky, where a tall, broad figure in a crisp white Marine Admiral’s coat stood on the bow of the lead dreadnought, staring down through the ice wall with a pair of cold, calculating iron-colored eyes.
“Drake,” Caelum growled.
Vice Admiral Drake, the relentless hunter of the New World, lowered his massive double-handed broadsword. His face was scarred, his beard peppered with gray, and his voice echoed across the open sea via a loud-speaker Den Den Mushi.
“Captain Vespera. Captain Caelum,” Drake’s voice boomed, heavy with disgust and authority. “Two of the most dangerous criminals in the New World. A traitorous Marine scientist who turned her back on justice, and an escaped livestock slave who dares to fly a pirate flag.”
Caelum’s jaw clenched, his fists glowing hot enough to char the wood beneath his feet at the mention of the word livestock. Vespera immediately noticed the subtle shift in his posture—the deep, agonizing trauma that surfaced every time his past was thrown in his face.
Without thinking, Vespera took a half-step sideways, her shoulder lightly brushing against Caelum’s arm. She didn’t look at him, but her tone was ice-cold and unyielding as she spoke into her own coat-mounted communication Den Den Mushi, her voice echoing back up to the Marine flagship.
“Your tactical assessment is flawed, Vice Admiral,” Vespera declared, her cold voice cutting through the wind like a diamond blade. “You came here expecting to capture two broken pirate crews fighting over scraps. Instead, you have forced a unification.”
Caelum looked down at her, his amber eyes wide with surprise, the dark anger in his chest instantly melting away into something warm and fiercely protective.
“By order of the World Government,” Drake’s voice growled back, “a joint fleet has been dispatched. A combined bounty has been authorized for your immediate liquidation. Ten billion Berries for the pair of you. The World Nobles have designated you… ‘The Twin Calamities’.”
“Ten billion?” Caelum barked out a sudden, boisterous laugh, his deep chest heaving as he slapped his hand against his thigh. “Hear that, Vespera? We’re a package deal now!”
Vespera’s face flushed red once more. “Do not celebrate our collective execution order, you absolute fool!” she snapped, though her gaze remained locked on the enemy. “Kaito! Get the crew into the lower decks! Caelum, with me! We must reach the drive core immediately!”
“Right behind you, Co-Captain!” Caelum grinned, turning and sprinting down the dark, ancient hatchway leading into the heart of The Crucible.
The interior of The Crucible was a sprawling labyrinth of obsidian corridors, bronze pipes, and massive brass gears that had sat motionless for centuries. The air was thick with the smell of old ozone, frozen sea-dust, and ancient metal.
Vespera led the way, her Observation Haki mapping out the ship’s complex internal architecture in her head. Caelum followed right at her heels, his broad frame taking up nearly the entire width of the hallway, the low, orange glow from his fiery hands illuminating the ancient runes carved into the walls.
They reached the engine room—a massive, cathedral-like chamber at the exact geometric center of the ship.
In the middle of the room stood the drive core: two massive, interconnected spherical chambers made of heavy, dark metal. One chamber was lined with red, heat-absorbing dragon-scale engravings; the other was carved with pale blue, kinetic-dampening runes. Above the core sat a dual captain’s helm—two massive, polished brass wheels mounted side-by-side on a central command platform overlooking the engine bay.
“This is it,” Vespera said, her voice echoing in the vast, silent space. She walked up to the blue control sphere, resting her gloved hand against its cold surface. “The mechanism requires a sudden, massive thermodynamic disparity to ignite the internal vacuum engine. I must drop the temperature of this core to absolute zero, while you must heat the opposing core to maximum thermal capacity—simultaneously.”
“How simultaneously are we talking?” Caelum asked, walking over to the red sphere and placing his giant hands against the metal.
“Within three-hundredths of a second,” Vespera replied, her analytical focus completely taking over. “If our energy output is unbalanced, the reaction will cause a catastrophic thermal explosion that will vaporize this ship and half the sky-island.”
Caelum looked across the platform at her. The low glow of his heat-core lit up his rugged face, highlighting the intense, fierce devotion in his golden eyes. “I trust your timing, Vespera. Just tell me when.”
Vespera felt a strange, unfamiliar fluttering in her chest. He trusts my timing? He isn’t questioning my math? He isn’t asking for a backup plan? He simply… trusts me.
“On my mark,” Vespera said, her voice surprisingly steady. She closed her eyes, breathing in deeply, feeling the flow of kinetic energy around her. She focused on the motion of the air, the vibration of the ship, and the rhythm of Caelum’s steady, warm pulse across the room.
“Three… two… one… EXECUTE!“
BOOM!
A blinding flash of dual light filled the cathedral chamber.
From Vespera’s hands, a wave of dark blue, kinetic-freezing power flooded into the left sphere. The temperature inside the chamber instantly plunged to minus two hundred and seventy-three degrees Celsius. Matter stopped moving. The blue runes on the ancient metal burst into a blinding, icy brilliance.
At the exact same instant, Caelum let out a primal, echoing roar. Superheated red forge-flames erupted from his body, turning his entire torso into a radiant, sun-like furnace. He poured millions of calories of pure, superheated thermodynamic energy into the right sphere, bringing its temperature up to four thousand degrees.
CLACK-CLACK-CLACK-CLACK!
Deep within the ship’s bowels, ancient gears that had been dead for eight hundred years suddenly groaned, slammed together, and began to spin at terrifying speeds.
The dual core roared to life, generating a massive magnetic pressure wave that rippled through the entire vessel. The black steel hull of The Crucible shuddered, the ancient glowing golden runes along its sides flaring to full, brilliant life.
Outside, the three-hundred-foot glacier wall shattered into fine dust as The Crucible’s massive iron wings unfolded from its sides with a sound like thunder. The giant ship lifted off the cloud-bed, rising gracefully into the sky, its twin dragon figurehead slicing through the clouds like a god returning to claim the heavens.
“It worked!” Caelum cheered, turning around with a broad, ecstatic grin.
Without thinking, caught up in the pure, exhilarating triumph of the moment, Caelum lunged forward, grabbed Vespera by the waist, lifted her completely off her feet, and spun her around in a massive, bear-hug swing.
“We did it, Vespera! The tub is flying!” he roared with laughter.
Vespera gasped, her mind instantly violently crashing.
Her waist was enveloped in his broad, burning hands. Her face was pressed directly against the crook of his neck, smelling the raw, heat-charged scent of his skin. Her legs were dangling in the air.
CONTACT. PHYSICAL CONTACT. EXTREME PROXIMITY. HE IS HOLDING ME. HE IS LIFTING ME. WHAT IS THE SCIENTIFIC PROTOCOL FOR BEING SWUNG IN CIRCLES BY A REEGULARLY UNCLOTHED BRAWLER?!
“Put me down!” Vespera shrieked, her voice cracking in a rare, glorious display of pure, unadulterated panic.
FROOOOOOSH!
Her Devil Fruit exploded.
A wave of intense, shockwave frost erupted outward from her body, instantly encasing the entire command platform, the dual captain’s wheels, the walls, and Caelum’s lower body in a massive, five-foot-thick solid block of clear, glittering ice.
Caelum froze in place, stuck mid-spin, his legs completely encased in ice up to his waist, while he was still holding Vespera in his arms above the frozen floor.
Silence fell over the engine room, save for the hum of the roaring core below.
Vespera hung there in his arms, her cheeks glowing bright crimson, her breath forming thick white clouds in the freezing air she had just created. She stared down at him, her sapphire eyes wide with utter mortification.
Caelum looked down at his frozen legs, then looked back up at Vespera’s flustered face. A soft, outrageously sweet chuckle rumbled in his chest.
“You really don’t like hugs, huh?” he asked gently, his golden eyes filled with warmth.
“I… I am a naval commander! I am not a… a plush toy to be swung about!” Vespera stuttered, desperately trying to push against his chest to regain her footing, only to realize her gloves were frozen to his leather vest. “Release me this instance!”
“Can’t,” Caelum said, giving her a helpless, goofy grin. “My feet are locked in six feet of your kinetic ice. And your gloves are stuck to my shirt. Looks like we’re staying right here until I melt us out.”
Before Vespera could formulate a retort, the ship shuddered violently once more.
BOOM!
A heavy artillery shell slammed into the outer hull of The Crucible, shaking the command deck. Through the observation window above, they could see Vice Admiral Drake’s lead battleship dropping down from the upper clouds, positioning itself directly alongside The Crucible.
“They’re boarding!” Kaito’s voice screamed over the internal communication horn. “Captain! Vice Admiral Drake and CP0 agents have landed on the main upper deck!”
Caelum’s face immediately hardened, the goofy smile vanishing as he looked up at the ceiling. “Looks like our welcome party arrived.”
He focused his heat, and within seconds, the ice encasing his legs and her gloves melted into steam. He set Vespera down gently on her feet, making sure she had her balance before stepping back.
“Can you fight?” Caelum asked, his voice dropping into that deep, terrifying conqueror’s tone.
Vespera drew her twin rapiers, the embarrassing panic instantly vanishing beneath her lethal, professional mask. The blades flickered with blue kinetic static as she looked at him with icy resolve.
“I can calculate the exact trajectory required to sever Vice Admiral Drake’s arm in three moves,” Vespera said coldly. “Can you keep up with my calculations, Captain Caelum?”
Caelum cracked his knuckles, a terrifying, fiery grin spreading across his face as red sparks burst from his shoulders.
“Lead the way, Co-Captain.”
The main upper deck of The Crucible was a massive, wide-open expanse of dark iron plating, large enough to house a small city square. High above, the cloud-covered sky of the New World churned with dark, lightning-streaked storm clouds.
Standing near the bow of the ship, surrounded by forty heavily armed Marine elite officers, was Vice Admiral Drake. Beside him stood two figures clad in immaculate white suits and silk cloaks, their faces hidden behind porcelain, bird-like masks—the elite assassins of Cipher Pol Aegis Zero.
The combined crews of the Frostbound Pirates and the Hearth-Hammer Pirates were pressed back against the aft deck, weapons drawn. Barnaby stood at the front, his massive cleaver glowing with heat, while Kaito stood beside him, throwing tactical knives with lethal precision.
“Stand down, pirates!” Drake shouted, his voice reinforced with Armament Haki as he stepped forward, his broadsword resting on his armored shoulder. “Your flagships are destroyed! You are surrounded in mid-air by the World Government! Surrender the Poneglyph rubbing and submit to arrest, or this vessel will become your floating tomb!”
The heavy iron hatchway at the center of the deck slammed open.
Vespera and Caelum stepped out onto the deck side-by-side.
The contrast between them was absolute. Vespera moved with the silent, deadly grace of a winter storm, her navy coat fluttering, her twin rapiers held in a perfect, flawless low-guard. Caelum walked beside her like a walking volcano, his bare chest radiating heat, his massive fists dripping with molten orange iron that sizzled as it hit the deck.
The two pirate captains stood shoulder-to-shoulder facing the Marine force.
“You’re on our ship, Drake,” Caelum said softly, his voice carrying over the roaring wind. “And you’re standing on my co-captain’s clean iron deck with dirty boots.”
“This vessel belongs to the World Nobles,” the lead CP0 agent spoke, his voice eerie, metallic, and devoid of emotion. “You are unauthorized entities. Your existence is a violation of international order. The ‘Twin Calamities’ will be erased here.”
The two CP0 agents vanished.
SOUBA!
Using the high-speed movement technique Sori, both assassins reappeared instantly in front of Vespera and Caelum, their fingers hardened like iron spears using Shigan, driving directly toward the captains’ throats.
“Too slow,” Vespera murmured.
Her Observation Haki had mapped their trajectories before they had even left the ground. She didn’t dodge. She simply raised her left rapier and tapped the air in front of the left agent.
“Absolute Zero: Kinetic Lock.“
The momentum of the CP0 agent’s high-speed movement was instantly stolen. Mid-air, two inches from Vespera’s blade, the assassin froze completely solid, locked in time and space as if trapped in amber.
At the exact same instant, Caelum caught the second CP0 agent’s thrusting hand in his massive, molten fist.
CRUNCH!
“Forge Grip.“
The heat from Caelum’s hand instantly melted the agent’s armored glove and shattered his hand bones. The agent gasped in pain, but before he could retreat, Caelum yanked him forward, driving his fiery left knee directly into the assassin’s masked face.
BOOM!
The CP0 mask shattered into pieces, and the assassin was sent flying across the deck, crashing through the Marine barricade and hurtling off the side of the ship into the sea below.
The remaining Marines took an instinctual step back, their faces pale with terror.
“They… they defeated CP0 agents in a single strike!” a Marine Lieutenant screamed. “They aren’t just coordinating… their fighting styles are complementing each other!”
Vice Admiral Drake’s face darkened with pure rage. He stepped forward, his massive broadsword glowing with pitch-black, high-grade Armament Haki.
“Imbeciles!” Drake roared. “They are two reckless captain-class pirates who have never sailed together! They have no synergy! Fire all forward cannons!”
The Marine dreadnought anchored beside The Crucible opened its gundecks. Thirty heavy cannons roared simultaneously, sending a dense curtain of explosive iron cannonballs speeding toward The Crucible’s deck.
“Vespera!” Caelum shouted, looking over at her. “High or low?”
Vespera didn’t hesitate. Her mind calculated the arc of the incoming artillery in a microsecond. “I will freeze the kinetic momentum of the upper salvo. You melt the lower trajectory!”
“Got it!”
Vespera leaped into the air, spinning gracefully like an ice dancer. She slashed her rapiers in a sweeping circle, launching a crescent wave of pale blue frost.
“Absolute Zero: Starlight Hail!“
Fifteen heavy cannonballs froze instantly in mid-air, their forward momentum instantly erased. They transformed into a floating cloud of motionless, ice-covered iron spheres suspended above the deck.
Below her, Caelum lunged forward, slamming both of his molten fists directly into the iron deck of The Crucible.
“Red Iron Forge: Erupting Anvil!“
A wall of roaring, golden forge-fire erupted from the deck, rising fifty feet into the air like a wall of living solar flare. The remaining fifteen cannonballs slammed into the fire-wall and instantly melted into liquid iron, raining harmlessly into the clouds below like orange fireworks.
The combined display of absolute cold and extreme heat lit up the storm-darkened sky, a terrifying, beautiful harmony of destruction that left the entire Marine fleet frozen in shock.
Vespera landed lightly beside Caelum, her twin rapiers humming with blue static. She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, her heart pounding—not from the battle, but from the terrifying, undeniable thrill of fighting beside a man who moved with her as if they had sailed together for a decade.
His reaction time is flawless, Vespera thought, her face burning beneath her cool expression. He didn’t hesitate for a single microsecond. He executed his strike exactly on my command. Why does it feel… so natural to stand beside him?
Caelum turned his head, catching her looking at him. He gave her a bright, wicked, golden-eyed grin, wiping a smear of soot from his cheek with the back of his hand.
“You look stunning when you fight, Vespera,” he said, his deep voice effortlessly carrying over the wind.
Vespera’s brain immediately stalled.
STUNNING?! IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSTER CALL BLOCKADE?!
“Focus on the enemy, you absolute moron!” Vespera shrieked, her voice cracking again as a sudden wave of frost accidentally blanketed the iron deck around Caelum’s boots. “Vice Admiral Drake is charging!”
Drake came roaring through the smoke, his broadsword raised high, black Haki lightning crackling off the steel blade as he leaped toward them with enough force to split a battleship in two.
“Iron Hound Style: Mountain Cleaver!” Drake bellowed.
Caelum stepped in front of Vespera, his fiery Conqueror’s Haki bursting forth as he raised his molten, red-hot arm to catch the falling blade with his bare hand.
CLANG!
A deafening shockwave of black Haki lightning exploded across the deck, tearing up iron floorplates and sending a gale-force wind sweeping through the sky. Caelum stood his ground, his feet skidding back three inches, his teeth gritted as he held Vice Admiral Drake’s massive sword in his bare, smoking hand.
“You’re strong, Drake,” Caelum growled, his golden eyes glowing with blinding heat. “But you’re standing between me and my co-captain!”
“Caelum! Hold him still!” Vespera’s voice rang out from behind him.
Vespera was already in motion. She didn’t attack Drake directly. Instead, she drove her right rapier into the back of Caelum’s shoulder—not to wound him, but to channel her kinetic-freezing energy directly through his body into the sword he was holding.
“Synergy Art: Absolute Thermal Shock!” Vespera shouted.
The sudden, brutal collision of Vespera’s absolute-zero cold meeting Caelum’s three-thousand-degree forge heat created a microscopic physical anomaly. The atomic structure of Vice Admiral Drake’s Haki-infused broadsword could not handle the rapid transition from extreme heat to absolute zero.
CRACK-SHATTER!
Drake’s prized, master-grade broadsword instantly disintegrated into a million glowing, frozen splinters of iron dust.
Drake’s eyes went wide with sheer horror as his weapon vanished. Before he could recover, Caelum slammed his left fist directly into Drake’s chest plate.
“Red Iron Forge: Impact Press!“
BOOM!
The Vice Admiral’s heavy steel armor crumpled like paper. Drake was blasted backward across the deck, bouncing three times before crashing into his own flagship’s main mast, bringing the entire wooden structure crashing down upon him and knocking him unconscious.
The remaining Marines stared at their fallen Vice Admiral in absolute silence.
“Retreat!” a Marine officer screamed in pure terror. “Break off the engagement! The Twin Calamities… they’re monsters! They destroyed an Admiral-class force in minutes!”
The Marine fleet immediately began cutting their anchor lines, frantically turning their dreadnoughts around to dive back into the lower cloud-banks.
An hour later, the skies above the sky-island had cleared.
The Crucible glided silently through the upper stratosphere, her glowing golden runes humming softly as her massive iron wings caught the high-altitude winds. Below, the sky-island faded into the distance, leaving the newly merged crew alone in the vast, open ocean of clouds.
On the main deck, the chaotic reality of their merger had fully set in.
Near the main hatchway, Barnaby had successfully moved his massive brick baking oven onto the deck and was currently handing out fresh, steaming loaves of honey-bread to a long line of rowdy Hearth-Hammer brawlers and extremely hesitant, neat-looking Frostbound tacticians.
“Eat up, eggheads!” Barnaby laughed boisterously, slapping a rigid Frostbound strategist on the back. “You can’t calculate wind speeds on an empty stomach!”
The strategist took a bite of the warm, fresh bread, his eyes widening in pure bliss before he quickly adjusted his glasses and looked away. “The… the texture is acceptable. I shall record this in the quartermaster log as an effective allocation of resources.”
A few feet away, Kaito was leaning against the ship’s railing, his leather logbook open as he wrote feverishly.
“Observation 408: Strategic merger of crews appears eighty-seven percent operational. Hearth-Hammer cook possesses high-level culinary skills. However, internal political tension remains critical regarding the shared quarters of the co-captains.“
Inside the captain’s quarters—a massive, vaulted suite located at the stern of the vessel—the real war was just beginning.
The suite was absurdly large, featuring high stone ceilings, a massive glass bay window overlooking the sea of clouds, and two distinct halves. The left side of the room was immaculately organized, featuring a neat oak desk, perfectly lined books, and a crisp, perfectly made single bed. The right side of the room was a chaotic workshop, filled with discarded iron tools, a roaring open fireplace, and a massive, oversized bed covered in thick furs.
Vespera stood in the center of the room, her navy coat off, wearing her white linen button-down shirt and black tactical trousers. She held a long piece of blue chalk in her hand, drawing a thick, perfectly straight line directly down the center of the wooden floorboards.
“This is the perimeter,” Vespera declared, her voice cold and absolute as she pointed the chalk at Caelum, who was sitting on the edge of his bed, bare-chested, bandaging his scorched right forearm. “This line divides the captain’s quarters into two equal, autonomous zones. You will not cross this line without explicit, written permission.”
Caelum stopped wrapping his bandage, looking up at the blue chalk line with a bemused grin. “Vespera, the only door to the washing room is on my side.”
Vespera froze, her eyes darting to the door in the right corner. Her mind calculated the spatial distribution once again, realizing her mistake.
“I… I shall establish a designated transit corridor,” she stammered, her face warming up instantly. She quickly drew two small parallel lines leading to the washing room door. “You will clear this corridor whenever I require access.”
“Fair enough,” Caelum chuckled, standing up and stretching his massive, muscular frame. The scars along his chest and back glowed faintly with residual heat, highlighting his powerful build.
Vespera’s eyes involuntarily tracked the line of his scar tissue, her heart giving a strange, violent thud against her ribs. She quickly looked down at her chalk. He is far too large. His torso should be covered. Why does he refuse to wear a proper shirt indoors? Is this a psychological tactic designed to disrupt my analytical concentration?
“You’re staring again, Co-Captain,” Caelum said softly.
“I am not staring!” Vespera snapped, drawing a chaotic, crooked chalk mark on the floor by accident. “I am assessing your physical injuries! Your forearm requires proper antiseptic dressing, not just cloth wrap.”
Before Caelum could reply, Vespera marched over to her neatly organized medical kit, grabbed a jar of cooling burn salve and fresh linen wraps, and stepped across her own chalk line directly into his zone.
“Sit down,” she commanded, pointing to the edge of his bed.
Caelum smirked, but obeyed, sitting back down on the fur-covered mattress.
Vespera knelt in front of him, opening the jar of salve. Her fingers trembled slightly as she took a scoop of the cold cream and gently applied it to the angry, red burn on his forearm—the spot where he had caught Vice Admiral Drake’s Haki sword to protect her.
The moment her fingers touched his skin, Caelum let out a soft, deep sigh, his entire body relaxing.
“You have remarkable precision,” he murmured, watching her face intently. “Even when you’re tending a wound.”
“It is simple biology and application of medical science,” Vespera muttered, refusing to look up into those golden eyes that were burning holes into her composure. “If your arm decays due to infection, our ship’s defensive capabilities will drop by thirty-four percent.”
“Is that the only reason you’re healing me?” Caelum asked gently.
Vespera’s fingers froze against his arm.
The silence inside the room became deafening, broken only by the crackle of the fireplace and the distant sound of the wind outside. She could feel the intense warmth radiating off his body, the steady, rhythmic rise and fall of his chest, and the sheer, overwhelming sincerity in his voice.
For a woman who had mastered advanced Conqueror’s Haki, defeated Marine Admirals, and outsmarted World Government assassins, answering a simple human question felt like trying to leap across the Red Line without a ship.
“I…” Vespera started, her voice barely a whisper. “I do not wish… for you to be injured.”
Caelum’s golden eyes widened slightly, a soft, immensely tender smile spreading across his scarred face. He reached up with his free hand, his thick, warm fingers lightly brushing a strand of silver hair behind her ear.
“Thanks, Vespera,” he said quietly. “That means a lot coming from you.”
TOUCH. HE IS TOUCHING MY HAIR.
CRACK-CRACK-CRACK!
A wave of spontaneous, uncontrolled kinetic frost instantly erupted from Vespera’s knees, sweeping across the floorboards, encasing Caelum’s entire bed, the nightstand, and his lower legs in a thick layer of solid blue ice.
Vespera gasped, scrambling backward out of his zone, her face burning with the heat of a thousand suns, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.
“A… an environmental thermal fluctuation!” she shrieked, backing away toward her side of the chalk line. “The… the air pressure inside this room is unstable! Do not draw any incorrect emotional conclusions!”
Caelum looked down at his frozen legs again, then threw his head back and let out a boisterous, echoing laugh that filled the room with genuine, golden warmth.
“You’re unbelievable, Ice Queen,” Caelum chuckled, resting his chin in his hand as he watched her panic. “I guess I’m sleeping in an icebox tonight.”
“It will melt by morning!” Vespera barked, wrapping her arms tightly around her chest as she retreated behind her oak desk, sitting down and pulling a fresh stack of charts toward her with frantic speed. “Go to sleep, Captain Caelum! We have high-altitude wind currents to navigate tomorrow!”
“Goodnight, Co-Captain,” Caelum said softly, his golden eyes filled with an unbearable amount of affection as he closed his eyes and leaned back against the frozen wall of his bed.
Vespera sat behind her desk, her fingers clutching her pen so hard the wood nearly snapped. She stared across the room at the giant, sleeping brawler who had upended her entire structured, cold world in less than forty-eight hours.
He is chaotic. He is reckless. He is emotionally absurd, Vespera thought, her face slowly cooling down as she watched the gentle rise and fall of his chest. And he is… completely unmanageable.
She looked down at her blank nautical chart, taking a quiet, deep breath, a tiny, almost invisible smile touching the corner of her lips before she caught herself and instantly wiped it away.
Suddenly, a sharp, frantic knocking shattered the late-night quiet of the captain’s suite.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
“Captain Vespera! Captain Caelum!” Kaito’s panicked voice shouted through the locked heavy oak door. “Wake up! We have an emergency!”
Caelum’s eyes snapped open, his furnace-flames instantly melting the ice around his legs as he leaped to his feet. Vespera was already at the door, her twin rapiers drawn, her cold, deadly demeanor returning in a fraction of a second.
She threw the door open. “Report, Kaito!”
Kaito was pale, his feather quill shaking in his hand, his eyes filled with pure terror. He held up a strange, black Den Den Mushi that was ringing with a terrifying, rhythmic BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.
“It’s an emergency broadcast on all Marine frequencies,” Kaito whispered, his voice trembling. “Five Vice Admirals and two Fleet Dreadnoughts have just cleared the storm belt behind us. But that’s not the worst part.”
Vespera’s sapphire eyes narrowed. “Speak.”
“The World Government has issued an absolute, high-tier priority command,” Kaito said, holding up a fresh bounty poster that had just come through the ship’s receiver wire.
The poster showed a composite photograph of Vespera and Caelum standing back-to-back on The Crucible’s deck, surrounded by fire and ice.
At the bottom of the poster, printed in bold, blood-red ink, was their new combined bounty:
THE TWIN CALAMITIES: VESPERA & CAELUM
BOUNTY: 12,000,000,000 BERRIES
SPECIAL ORDER: A BUSTER CALL HAS BEEN AUTHORIZED FOR ALL SECTORS OF THE NEW WORLD. ERADICATE UPON SIGHT.
Before Vespera could process the staggering figure, the black Den Den Mushi in Kaito’s hand picked up the live signal. A deep, chilling, terrifyingly calm voice echoed into the hallway—a voice that every pirate in the New World knew and feared.
“Attention, Twin Calamities,” the voice of Marine Admiral Akainu growled through the speaker, sending a spike of pure ice through Vespera’s veins. “You have stolen an ancient weapon of the Void Century. There is no ocean deep enough, and no sky high enough, to hide you from justice. A full fleet of ten Admirals and five Pacifista divisions are converging on your location. Prepare to burn.”
The signal went dead.
Vespera turned her head slowly, looking back at Caelum, who was standing right beside her, his fiery amber eyes locked onto hers with absolute, terrifying resolve.
“Ten Admirals,” Caelum murmured, a dark, dangerous, thrilled smile spreading across his scarred face as he cracked his molten knuckles. “Sounds like a party.”
Vespera looked at the twelve-billion-Berry bounty in Kaito’s trembling hands, then looked back up at her giant, heat-generating co-captain.
“Kaito,” Vespera commanded, her voice dropping into an ice-cold, razor-sharp whisper that echoed through the corridors of The Crucible. “Sound the battle stations horn. It appears we are going to war with the entire world.”
