Chapter 11: The Phantom of the Silver Screen

The morning after the grand five-course casserole feast on Blackwood Ridge, the global financial press suffered a collective nervous breakdown.

Wall Street analysts had pre-written headlines about hostile takeovers, corporate liquidations, and blood spilled in boardrooms. Instead, the front page of the Oakhaven Financial Sentinel featured a high-resolution telephoto photograph taken through the estate’s iron gates: Julian Vance, Chief Executive of Vance Global, carrying a thirty-pound sack of organic potatoes out of a commercial delivery van while wearing a charcoal sweater smeared with flour.

The internet, as it was prone to doing when unstoppable corporate titans exhibited basic human mortality, completely lost its mind.

By nine o’clock in the morning, Julian Vance was officially a viral meme.

Inside the glass-walled breakfast nook of the primary suite, Maya sat at the marble table, holding a mug of warm hazelnut tea in one hand and her personal tablet in the other. Her dark eyes were wide, her cheeks flushed a brilliant, glowing shade of rose, and her shoulders were shaking with silent, uncontrollable laughter.

“Maya,” a low, dark voice growled from the threshold of the dressing room.

Maya bit her lower lip hard, attempting to force her face into a quiet, obedient line, but a tiny, squeaking giggle escaped her lips before she could catch it.

Julian stood in the doorway.

He was impeccably dressed for a day of remote executive meetings—wearing a tailored dark navy suit, crisp white dress shirt, and a silk tie—but his posture was a statue of pure, unadorned doom. His striking amber-hazel eyes were fixated on the tablet in her small hands with the absolute, terrifying intensity he normally reserved for hostile foreign takeovers.

“It is not funny,” Julian said flatly, his baritone dropping into a register so deep it made the porcelain tea cups on the tray vibrate.

“It is… a little bit funny, Julian,” Maya whispered, her dark eyes sparkling with gentle, unyielding mischief as she turned the tablet screen toward him.

On the screen was a magnified image of Julian carrying the potato sack yesterday evening. Someone on an online forum had edited a bright yellow construction hardhat onto his dark hair and added the caption:

WHEN YOUR TWO-YEAR CONTRACT MARRIAGE ACCIDENTALLY TURNS INTO AN UNPAID INTERNSHIP AT A FARM.

Beneath that, a short video clip from their national television interview had been looped into a six-second reaction GIF. Every time a user typed a complaint about corporate overworking, a tiny digital Julian Vance would appear on screen, glare with terrifying intensity into the lens, and slowly take a bite out of a dry piece of toast.

It had been shared four hundred thousand times in six hours.

“Marcus is currently in contact with the server administrators in California,” Julian said, stepping into the room with heavy, measured strides that made his broad six-foot-two frame loom over her table. “I have ordered the deletion of the domain.”

“You can’t delete the internet, Mr. Vance,” Maya laughed out loud, leaning back against her chair, her soft cheeks still burning with a gorgeous, radiant blush. “And besides… look at the comments! Everyone says you look like a very protective, very handsome lumberjack.”

Julian stopped right beside her chair. His jaw flexed tight. “I am not a lumberjack. I am the majority shareholder of an international maritime logistics conglomerate.”

“A handsome lumberjack who carries my potato sacks,” Maya corrected smoothly, reaching up to gently touch his sleeve, her fingers pressing into the heavy wool of his tailored navy jacket. “Look… this one has two million likes. It says: Find a man who looks at you the way Julian Vance looks at a Pyrex dish of chicken and dumplings.“

Julian’s left eyebrow twitched. He looked down at the tablet screen, then down at his wife’s radiant, blushing face.

The cold, corporate doom in his expression faltered for a microsecond, threatened by the sheer, unpurchasable joy glowing in her dark eyes. But before he could lean down to claim the lips that were currently teasing him, Leo hurried into the breakfast nook wearing his dark school blazer and carrying his leather satchel.

“Maya! Look!” Leo shouted, holding up his own private tablet that Dr. Chen had loaded with educational apps. “You’re on the news again! But it’s not about the court!”

Maya turned her head, her dark eyes pulling down into a curious line. “What is it, Leo?”

Leo pressed play on a entertainment news clip broadcast from Los Angeles.

A polished, hyperactive entertainment host stepped onto a bright blue studio stage, pointing at a giant digital screen behind her.

“In other news today, the internet’s favorite new power couple, Julian and Maya Vance, are making waves in Hollywood! During a red carpet premiere last night in London, world-famous action star Alexander Sterling was asked about the sudden marriage of the Vance Global CEO!”

The screen cut to a clip of a towering, thirty-six-year-old British actor with piercing blue eyes, rugged blonde hair, and a charming, million-dollar smile, wearing a velvet tux on a rain-slicked red carpet.

The reporter’s voice echoed through the microphone: “Alexander! Have you seen the viral photos of the new Mrs. Vance? What do you think of Oakhaven’s newest high-society icon?”

Alexander Sterling let out a rich, movie-star laugh, leaning toward the camera with an effortless, magnetic charm.

“Oh, absolutely, darling!” the actor said into the microphone, winking straight into the lens. “I saw her television interview yesterday. Mrs. Maya Vance is absolute perfection. Gentle, honest, and completely devastating. If Mr. Vance ever decides he’s too busy running cargo ships to take her to a movie premiere, tell her my private jet is always waiting in London!”

The entertainment studio erupted into dramatic gasps and giggles.

Inside the quiet, sunlit breakfast nook of the Vance Estate, the temperature dropped forty degrees in less than half a second.

The tablet screen froze on the actor’s handsome, winking face.

Maya went completely, utterly motionless.

A deep, vivid, and unmistakable crimson flush rushed up her neck, flooding her cheeks, her ears, and reaching all the way to her hairline. She stared at the frozen image of Alexander Sterling on Leo’s screen, her lower lip parting slightly in absolute, undeniable shock.

Julian didn’t move a muscle.

He stood beside Maya’s chair like a monument carved from dark, lethal granite. His broad shoulders squared. His breathing stopped entirely. His striking amber-hazel eyes narrowed into two pitch-black, murderous points of pure, unadorned, white-hot jealousy.

Leo, completely oblivious to the nuclear meltdown occurring two feet above his head, giggled happily. “Maya has all his movie posters in her old closet on 4th Avenue! She watched his spy movie five times in the theater!”

The quiet in the room was so thick it felt as though the ocean outside had stopped churning.

Maya slowly turned her head.

She looked up into Julian’s face.

The CEO of Vance Global was staring at the frozen picture of Alexander Sterling on the screen with a look of such terrifying, cold, and absolute execution that Maya felt her heart execute a violent, fluttering leap against her ribs.

His skin was pale, his razor-sharp jaw clenched so tight a thick vein stood out along his neck. The spatial pressure radiating from his six-foot-two frame was immense—not the pressure of a corporate threat, but the wild, possessive fury of a man who had just heard an intruder attempt to step onto his private island.

“Maya,” Julian whispered.

His voice was not a roar. It was a low, smooth, and terrifyingly quiet purr that sent a thrilling, electric shiver straight down her spine.

“Yes, Julian?” Maya squeaked out, her cheeks still burning a bright, undeniable scarlet.

Julian slowly turned his dark hazel eyes away from the screen and locked them directly onto her blushing face.

“Who,” Julian rasped out, his baritone thick, gravelly, and vibrating with absolute, murderous intent, “is Alexander Sterling?”

“He’s just an actor, Julian!” Maya pleaded fifteen minutes later, following her towering husband down the marble gallery of the east wing.

Julian was walking with long, aggressive strides, his navy suit coat unbuttoned, his hands shoved deep into his trousers pockets. He didn’t look back, but his posture was a wall of pure, unyielding iron.

“He is an individual who possesses a private jet in London,” Julian stated cold, his baritone echoing off the dark walnut paneling. “And he has publicly offered transport services to my wife on national television.”

“It was a joke!” Maya gasped, her soft canvas shoes hurrying to keep pace with his massive steps, her face still warm with that adorable, lingering flush. “Hollywood actors say things like that to get publicity for their movies! It doesn’t mean anything!”

Julian stopped abruptly in the center of his private study entrance, whirling around so fast that Maya almost ran straight into his broad chest.

He reached out, his long, heavy fingers gently grabbing her arms, steadying her against him. He lowered his face until his sharp jaw was inches from hers, his striking amber eyes blazing with an intense, possessive, and wildly white-hot fire.

“He called you ‘devastating,’ Maya,” Julian growled softly, his thumb pressing through the wool of her sweater. “He called you ‘absolute perfection’ on a global broadcast.”

“He was being polite!” Maya squeaked, looking up into his fiercely jealous, handsome face.

“He was being an international target,” Julian corrected flatly.

He turned his head slightly toward his executive desk, where Marcus was standing near a secure laptop, holding a leather folder.

“Marcus,” Julian commanded, his voice laced with a dark, terrifying authority.

“Sir?” Marcus answered instantly, his scarred face stoic.

“Find out which maritime shipping lines provide fuel logistics for Alexander Sterling’s private aviation fleet in Europe,” Julian ordered, his hazel eyes never leaving Maya’s blushing face. “Cancel their fuel distribution contracts by noon.”

Maya’s jaw dropped in absolute, horrified astonishment. “Julian! You cannot cancel an actor’s jet fuel because he gave me a compliment!”

“I am the Chief Executive of Vance Global, Mrs. Vance,” Julian murmured, his baritone dropping into a low, possessive purr against her ear as he pulled her gentle frame flush against his suit. “I can manipulate global fuel supplies however I see fit to maintain the absolute security of my household.”

“Julian Vance! That is abuse of corporate power!” Maya gasped, though the sheer, ridiculous absurdity of his white-hot jealousy made a tiny, uncontainable giggle bubble up in her throat.

“It is strategic perimeter defense,” Julian countered without a single trace of humor on his carved granite face.

Marcus coughed softly behind his hand, looking down at his tablet. “Sir… if I may?”

Julian didn’t release his grip on Maya’s waist. “Speak, Marcus.”

“Mr. Sterling’s latest spy film, The Phantom of the Shore, is scheduled to hold its primary red carpet premiere in downtown Oakhaven this Friday evening at the Palace Theater,” Marcus reported, reading from his screen. “The production studio is owned by a subsidiary holding company that Vance Global acquired three years ago.”

Julian went completely motionless.

His amber eyes narrowed into two tight, lethal slits. A slow, dark, and utterly terrifying smile touched the corner of his hard lips—a smile so dark, handsome, and dangerous that Maya felt her breath catch in her throat.

“They are premiering his film in my city?” Julian asked softly, his voice carrying a smooth, quiet malice.

“Yes, sir,” Marcus nodded. “The studio has requested permission to use the private VIP terrace at Vance Tower for the post-premiere afterparty.”

Julian looked down at Maya. He took in her blushing cheeks, her expressive dark eyes, and the lingering, sweet amusement glowing on her face.

He reached up, his thumb gently tracing her lower lip, his grip on her waist tightening until she was pressed completely against his beating heart.

“Grant the permission, Marcus,” Julian commanded, his baritone vibrating through Maya’s chest like thunder. “And tell the studio head that the Chief Executive of Vance Global and his wife will be attending the premiere as the primary guest of honor.”

Maya stared up at her husband, her dark eyes wide with shock. “Julian… you don’t even like movies! You told me cinema was an inefficient use of two hours!”

“I do not like cinema, Mrs. Vance,” Julian whispered against her lips, his hazel eyes burning with a dark, all-consuming, and wildly possessive devotion. “But I am going to stand on that red carpet, in front of every camera in this country, and show Mr. Sterling exactly what happens when a phantom tries to step onto my land.”

Maya looked up into the fierce, wildly jealous, and impossibly handsome face of her husband—the titan who commanded global logistics, who had dismantled corporate syndicates, and who was now prepared to buy an entire film studio just because an action star had winked at her on television.

She couldn’t hold it in any longer. A bright, clear, and radiant laugh burst from her lips, her arms winding around his broad neck as she pulled his face down to hers, kissing his sharp jaw with pure, unadorned love.

“You are completely crazy, Mr. Vance,” Maya whispered happily against his skin.

“I am a man in love, Mrs. Vance,” Julian growled softly, wrapping his heavy arms around her, lifting her effortlessly against his chest as the sun shone brightly over the glass fortress of Blackwood Ridge—possessive, invincible, and entirely hers.
