For fans hoping to see the triumphant return of Joseph Quinn as the charismatic Eddie Munson in the final season of Stranger Things, the show’s creators have delivered a definitive answer. Despite his character’s popularity, Eddie will not be coming back, a decision confirmed by the Duffer Brothers. However, his spirit will profoundly influence the story through Gaten Matarazzo‘s character, Dustin Henderson, who is grappling with grief by consciously and unconsciously adopting the mannerisms of his lost friend.
The Official Word on Eddie’s Return
The hope for Eddie Munson’s return has been a popular topic among fans since his heroic sacrifice in Season 4. Actor Joseph Quinn himself occasionally fueled these speculations with playful and cryptic comments on red carpets. However, Matt Duffer, one of the series’ creators, has put all theories to rest. He explicitly confirmed that Eddie is truly gone, stating, “I love that Joe Quinn is toying with people! But no, heโs dead”. He further emphasized the finality of the decision by adding, “Heโs fully under that ground”. The showrunners have stood by the narrative purpose of Eddie’s death, believing that bringing him back would undermine the emotional impact of his sacrifice and the story’s stakes.
How Dustin Is Keeping Eddie’s Spirit Alive
While Eddie Munson may not appear in the flesh, his presence will be deeply felt throughout the final season through Dustin. Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin, has revealed that his character is processing his grief in a way that leads him to emulate his late friend. This manifests in both subtle and deliberate changes to who Dustin is.
Matarazzo explained that there are “subconscious changes, things that Dustin doesn’t realize he’s changed”. More visibly, Dustin makes a conscious effort to honor Eddie’s memory. The actor detailed, “There’s also a whole plethora of very specific choices on his part to change certain things about himself, to try to look like Eddie, to uphold his values and what he loved about Hellfire and D&D”. In the trailers and released photos for Season 5, this is evident in Dustin’s longer, curlier hair and the rings he now wears on his fingers, a style that strongly calls to mind Eddie’s look.
“It’s a pretty natural process for somebody that young who is grieving to try to physically embody somebody they’ve lost, to try to keep them around,” said Gaten Matarazzo.
This emulation is more than just a fashion statement; it’s a coping mechanism. Matarazzo described Eddie as a person who was “that influential to your confidence,” making the loss especially difficult for Dustin. The trailer for the new season also includes a poignant shot of Dustin visiting Eddie’s grave, which has been vandalized with the words “Burn in Hell,” showing that the public’s negative perception of Eddie still lingers in Hawkins.
The Last Adventure Awaits
Stranger Things Season 5 is the show’s final chapter. The story picks up in the fall of 1987, with the town of Hawkins scarred by the giant rifts to the Upside Down. Our heroes are united with the single goal of finding and killing Vecna, who has mysteriously vanished. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under a strict military quarantine and is intensifying its hunt for Eleven.
The final season will be released in three volumes on Netflix. Volume 1, consisting of the first four episodes, arrives on November 26, 2025. Volume 2 with episodes five through seven follows on Christmas Day, and the series finale, episode eight, will be released on New Year’s Eve, bringing the epic story to a close.
