Production Background and Director Change
Legendary Entertainment acquired the film and television rights to Street Fighter in April 2023. Directors Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk to Me) were initially attached to direct but left the project in June 2024 to focus on their film Bring Her Back. Kitao Sakurai was hired as the new director in February 2025.
Casting announcements began in May 2025 and continued throughout the summer. The movie was originally set for a March 20, 2026 release by Sony Pictures, but was delayed and moved to Paramount after Legendaryโs distribution deal with Sony ended.
Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg of Paramount Pictures said, โLegendary has built a reputation for ambitious, globally appealing films, and weโre excited to be partnering with them. Street Fighter is the perfect start to our collaboration.โ
Legendary CEO Josh Grode added, โPartnering with Paramount marks an exciting new chapter for Legendary as we continue to pursue a diversified growth strategyโexpanding our output, building new franchises, and creating more films for global audiences.โ
Capcomโs Strategy for Broader Brand Recognition
Capcom, the Japanese company behind the Street Fighter games, is jointly financing the film. In a press release, the company stated that adapting its games into visual media is a โvaluable opportunity to broaden awareness of Capcomโs IP beyond the gaming audience.โ This effort is part of their โSingle Content Multiple Usageโ strategy to increase the global value of their brands.
The Street Fighter game series has sold over 55 million units worldwide since the first game launched in 1987.
