Surely Tomorrow Episode 3 pulls its central couple, Lee Kyeong-do and Seo Ji-woo, from airport chaos into a tense, shared living space, forcing them to confront a past more painful than simple heartbreak. As flashbacks reveal the roots of their separation, the present becomes a minefield of addiction, shame, and a desperate act that leaves one question hanging: can love survive when it’s built on so much damage?
A Reluctant Roommate and a Web of Lies
After being released by airport police, Ji-woo gives Kyeong-do a blunt choice: either buy her an expensive first-class ticket to England or let her stay at his apartment. Faced with the 7.2 million won price tag, Kyeong-do reluctantly agrees to the latter. Ji-woo immediately spins the story for her friends, claiming Kyeong-do chased her to the airport in a grand romantic gesture, much to his irritation when he becomes the target of their teasing calls.
The forced cohabitation is strained from the start. Kyeong-do returns home one night to find Ji-woo drunk; she stumbles into him, and they fall to the floor, with her eventually falling asleep on top of him. He carefully puts her to bed but chooses to sleep on the couch, maintaining a physical and emotional distance. His growing frustration with her constant drinking finally boils over, leading him to leave the apartment. He claims he will stay at a sauna but instead checks into a men’s dormitory, using his absence to set a firm boundary.
A Past Rooted in Humiliation and a Symbolic Coin
The episode delves into a formative flashback to 2007. A young Kyeong-do is working part-time at a luxury hotel restaurant when he sees Ji-woo dining with her wealthy family. Her true background as the heir to the Jarim Apparel empire is exposed, shattering the lies she had told him about her life. Ji-woo’s sister, Ji-yeon, tries to help by giving them a moment to talk, but it is destroyed when their mother, Hyun-kyung, sees them. She publicly humiliates Kyeong-do, telling the manager to change their waiter and making his lower social status painfully clear.
Despite this painful start, their relationship blossoms. In a heartfelt moment by the sea, Ji-woo confesses she first noticed Kyeong-do when he was desperately searching for a lost 500-won coin. This coin becomes their symbol. Kyeong-do later works tirelessly to buy her an orange dress from her family’s brand and gifts her a pocket watch with the special coin placed inside.
The Devastating Truth About Kyeong-Do’s Struggle
Back in the present, a crucial truth comes to light. Ji-woo meets her friend Se-young, who reveals that Kyeong-do battled severe alcohol addiction for years after Ji-woo left him the second time. Se-young explains he nearly drank himself to death, underwent rehab, and suffered relapses. She begs Ji-woo never to drink in front of him again.
Armed with this knowledge, Ji-woo confronts Kyeong-do. He tries to downplay it, saying his drinking was his own responsibility, but the emotional dam breaks. He finally confesses how her two sudden disappearances shattered him. In return, Ji-woo offers her own painful truth:
“She confesses that she left because she wanted to die and failed as she walks away wishing him happiness, not forgiveness.”
This raw exchange reframes their entire dynamic. Kyeong-do’s anger is not pettiness but the scar tissue from a deep wound, and Ji-woo’s flightiness is a mask for profound despair.

A Family Secret Explodes and a Desperate Cliffhanger
Ji-woo also confronts her mother, who is pressuring her to take over the family business. In a powerful scene, Ji-woo reveals she knows the core family secret: she is her mother’s illegitimate child, and Ji-yeon is her half-sister from their mother’s affair. The truth strips her mother of all control, sending her into a panic.
The episode’s tension culminates in a frightening sequence. Later that night, Se-young cannot reach Ji-woo by phone and calls Kyeong-do in a panic. He rushes to Ji-woo’s apartment, breaks down the door, and finds her unconscious on the floor, with scattered pills around her. The episode ends with Kyeong-do desperately rushing her to the hospital, leaving her fate unknown.
