SZA, the Grammy-winning singer, has publicly supported Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber following a series of online videos that analyzed their marriage. Her comments come as the couple takes legal action against a social media influencer for making claims about their private life.

The TikTok Claims That Sparked the Controversy

The situation began when a TikTok user, Julie Theis, posted videos commenting on the Biebers’ relationship. In her content, she presented a theory about certain celebrity couples, using Justin and Hailey Bieber as a primary example. The videos suggested that Hailey Bieber was in what was described as a “compromising relationship” and characterized her as a “tolerant codependent” wife. The content claimed the marriage involved “abuse” linked to alleged “drug addiction”.

These videos gained significant attention online. The discussion intensified when some social media users believed Hailey Bieber had reposted one of these videos to her own account, seemingly commenting on her own relationship. This led to widespread speculation and discussion across platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

SZA Questions the Source’s Credentials

SZA entered the conversation by directly questioning the TikToker in the comments section of the social media platform. She focused on the manner in which the psychological analysis was presented.

“Hi! Are you a licensed therapist or psychologist? You speak with SUCH certainty I’d like to know. Peace,” SZA wrote.

In a separate comment, SZA expressed concern about the potential dangers of diagnosing people without personal contact. She framed her point as an opinion offered with respect, highlighting the ethical considerations involved.

“Diagnosing people you have no contact with and presenting that information as fact under the premise of education may be a bit dangerous? For all parties including you wish to educate, just an opinion! All respect to you,” SZA stated.

Her comments resonated with many fans and observers online. On a Facebook post discussing SZA’s defense, one supporter noted, “Sza is correct as for me. I am a Psychology graduate as well, but I’m not licensed to diagnose individuals. And even if I were, I wouldn’t share it publicly”. Another comment read, “i mean sza ain’t wrong lol you can have a degree all day, but at the end of the day she don’t even know them personally to speak on anything”.

Hailey Bieber Denies Sharing the Video

Amid the growing online rumors, Hailey Bieber directly addressed her followers to clarify the situation. She took to her Instagram Stories to shut down the claim that she had reposted any video analyzing her marriage.

“Hey! I know you guys who live on the internet are really bored, but I didn’t repost any video speaking on my relationship,” Hailey wrote on Saturday, January 10. She added, “Have a beautiful Saturday!”.

This was not the first time Hailey has had to confront public speculation about her marriage. In a past interview with W Magazine, she spoke about the persistent rumors. “People have made me feel so bad about my relationship since day one,” she said. “‘Oh, they’re falling apart. They hate each other. They’re getting divorced.’ It’s like people don’t want to believe that we’re happy”.

Legal Action and the Influencer’s Response

The Biebers responded to the ongoing claims with more than just social media statements. Their legal team sent a cease-and-desist letter to Julie Theis. The letter, obtained by outlets like TMZ, accused Theis of spreading “outrageous false, fabricated and defamatory statements” online about their marriage.

The couple’s lawyer, Evan Spiegel, demanded that the influencer immediately remove the videos in question and stop posting content alleging the Biebers are in an abusive relationship. The legal notice warned that failure to comply would leave the couple with no choice but to pursue further legal action to protect their rights.

In response, Julie Theis spoke to TMZ and posted on her own social media channels. She defended her videos as “opinion-based commentary about relationship dynamics and power”. She expressed concern that the Biebers were trying to “silence and intimidate” her and argued that her statements were protected free speech.

“It’s extremely elitist to try to silence opinions just because you disagree. Disagreement is not defamation,” Theis told TMZ.

She also claimed to have received death threats since the controversy began.

A History of Public Support Between SZA and Justin Bieber

SZA’s public defense of the Biebers is notable given her professional history with Justin. In May 2025, Justin Bieber made a surprise appearance during SZA and Kendrick Lamar’s Grand National Tour concert at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. He joined SZA on stage for a performance of their collaboration “Snooze,” a moment that generated significant positive fan reaction.

Hailey Bieber was in the audience for that performance, showing her support. She shared posts about the concert on her Instagram Stories, calling SZA and Justin “my 2 favorite artists”. This history adds context to SZA’s decision to speak up, suggesting a supportive professional relationship between the artists.

The Constant Scrutiny of a High-Profile Marriage

Justin and Hailey Bieber, who married in 2018 and share a son named Jack, born in 2024, have faced near-constant public speculation about their relationship. Just weeks before the current controversy, in late December, Hailey shared a cryptic TikTok video to her Instagram Stories with the caption “Me to all of you on the Internet,” which many interpreted as a response to ongoing divorce rumors.

Despite the scrutiny, both have spoken about the strength of their bond. In a joint interview for Vogue Australia, Hailey described Justin as her “best friend in the entire world”. Justin has also been open about the challenges of marriage, noting in a 2022 interview that he initially thought “marriage was going to fix all my problems and it didn’t,” leading to personal reflection.

The couple’s approach to handling rumors appears to be evolving. While they have often ignored speculation in the past, recent actions—including Hailey’s direct social media denial and their decision to pursue legal action—indicate a more assertive stance against what they perceive as false narratives about their private life.
