Former BIGBANG member T.O.P, known as “Thanos” in “Squid Game 2”, recently cleared up speculation about a dance move in the series that resembled BIGBANG’s iconic “BANG BANG BANG” choreography. In an interview with Chinese Zhongshi News Network on January 24, 2025, T.O.P explained that the similarity was completely unintentional.

The scene in question occurs during the “Mingle” game, where T.O.P performs a dance that sparked comparisons to BIGBANG’s famous hook step. Many fans believed it was a deliberate tribute, but T.O.P confirmed that this was not the case.

An Unintentional Resemblance

T.O.P explained his thought process behind the dance:

“On the set, I thought to myself, what kind of dance would Thanos perform? It was just as I got into the character, I heard the lyrics repeatedly saying ‘spin around,’ so I naturally did a cowboy-style dance. But honestly, I don’t even remember performing that dance. It was only after watching the final work that I realised it. This was entirely unintentional.”

He emphasized that he was focused on embodying the character of Thanos and simply reacted to the music and the moment. He wasn’t consciously trying to recreate any previous choreography. He also stated:

“Actually, that dance segment, I wasn’t thinking of a previous dance when performing it. At that time, I was completely immersed in the role.”

This explanation clarifies that the resemblance to “BANG BANG BANG” was a coincidence, delighting fans with a touch of nostalgia.

Other Topics Discussed in the Interview

The interview, titled “Couldn’t resist dancing to Bang Bang Bang’ in Squid Game 2? T.O.P reveals the true story,” covered two other topics:

  • Rap Lyrics: T.O.P confirmed that the rap lyrics he performed in “Squid Game 2” were not from BIGBANG’s song “Last Dance.” He explained that the original lyrics were more extensive, but he rewrote them to better suit Thanos’ character as a “failed hip hop loser,” opting for simpler and more naive lyrics.
  • Favorite Squid Game Character: When asked which other “Squid Game” character he would like to play, T.O.P surprisingly chose the “Red light, Green Light” doll, Young-hee, amusing the interviewers.

T.O.P also expressed his gratitude to fans for their support and creativity surrounding his character, mentioning that he enjoyed the various memes and reels inspired by his role. He stated:

“I will work hard to become an artist worth looking forward to.”

The interview offered fans valuable insight into T.O.P’s perspective on his role in “Squid Game 2” and cleared up some circulating questions and speculations.
