Frankel highlighted the role of Catholic guilt in Grasso’s character, a feeling of having done wrong and needing to repent.
Frankel stated that Grasso never intended for Lizzie to get hurt. He revealed that the bond between the two characters was real and not part of a plan. In an interview, he clarified their relationship:
He’s already developed a huge bond with her. It’s funny, because I was getting asked in press if Lizzie is a part of his plan or if he was using her all along, which is what I didn’t believe. I know that when Brad [Ingelsby] was writing the show, he didn’t think that was the case. These are two people who genuinely really get along and develop a real friendship.
He further explained that Grasso’s feelings for Lizzie were complicated by his own beliefs, which prevented him from pursuing a physical relationship.
