Taylor Swift Personally Chose "Bigger Than The Whole Sky" For Lena Dunham's Netflix Series Too Much

Taylor Swift played a key role in selecting the perfect song for an emotional scene in Lena Dunham’s new Netflix series Too Much. The singer suggested her 2022 track “Bigger Than The Whole Sky” from Midnights for a pivotal moment in the show.

The song plays during a heartbreaking scene where the main character, Jessica (played by Megan Stalter), deals with back-to-back losses. First, she breaks up with Felix (Will Sharpe), and then her dog dies unexpectedly. As Jessica processes her grief, she receives a message from Wendy (Emily Ratajkowski), her ex’s new partner. Instead of a confrontation, the meeting leads to a moment of understanding.

How Taylor Swift’s Song Made The Scene More Powerful

Originally, Dunham had planned to use a different song for the scene. However, after watching the sequence with her brother Austin Swift, who helps with her music placements, Taylor had a better idea.

“She said, ‘Actually, I think I know what should be here,’” Dunham recalled in an interview with USA Today.

The surprising part? The song fit perfectly without any changes to the editing.

“We did not have to move a frame. That song just said everything that had to be said,” Dunham explained.

This marks the first time Dunham has used Swift’s music in her work, even though they have been close friends for years.

The Friendship Between Taylor Swift and Lena Dunham

Swift and Dunham have a long history. Dunham appeared in Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video in 2015. The singer was also a bridesmaid at Dunham’s 2021 wedding to musician Luis Felber, who co-created Too Much.

Dunham has often praised Swift’s influence, calling her a “mind-blowing person” and a role model for young women.

“She’s extraordinarily well adjusted and emotionally intuitive. And it’s really amazing for young women to see that in front of them,” Dunham said in an interview with The Times.

The Story Behind Too Much

The series is loosely based on Dunham’s relationship with Felber. The show follows Jessica, an American woman who moves to London after a tough breakup. There, she meets Felix, a British musician, and their complicated romance unfolds.

Dunham wanted the show to feel authentic, especially in how it portrays London.

“We were seeing some spaces that weren’t just Notting Hill. Whether it’s Jessica living in East London or Felix making music in Camberwell, there was a truth to it,” she told USA Today.

The series also explores themes of grief, change, and personal growth.

Why Taylor Swift Rarely Allows Her Songs in TV Shows

Swift is known for being selective about where her music is used. Recently, she approved her updated version of “Look What You Made Me Do” for The Handmaid’s Tale.

Her careful choices show that every placement has meaning. “Bigger Than The Whole Sky” in Too Much is no exception—it adds depth to a key emotional moment.

Fan Reactions and Impact

Fans of both Swift and Dunham have praised the song choice. Many say it enhances the scene’s emotional weight.
