The 40th Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards celebrated the best in television for the 2023-24 season on July 12, 2024. The event TCA Awards 2024, held at the Langham Pasadena in Los Angeles, marked a return to in-person celebrations after several years of virtual ceremonies due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Hollywood strikes. The awards were decided by the TCA’s membership, which includes over 230 TV journalists from the United States and Canada.

Shogun Dominates the Night in TCA Awards 2024

The standout of the night was FX’s Shōgun, which won several top awards. The period drama was honored with Program of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Drama, Outstanding New Program, and Individual Achievement in Drama for Anna Sawai. The series, set in feudal Japan, captivated audiences and critics alike with its compelling storytelling and powerful performances.

Jean Smart Shines in Hacks

Jean Smart continued her winning streak, taking home the Individual Achievement in Comedy award for her role in Max’s Hacks. The series itself also triumphed, winning Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, surpassing tough competitors like last year’s winner The Bear and 2022’s victor Abbott Elementary. Smart’s portrayal of an aging comedian navigating the evolving entertainment landscape has been widely acclaimed, solidifying her place as a standout in television comedy.

Twin Peaks Receives Heritage Award

The iconic series Twin Peaks, created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, was honored with the Heritage Award. First airing in 1990, the series has left a lasting impact on the television landscape with its unique blend of mystery, horror, and surrealism. The show starred Kyle MacLachlan and ran for two seasons, earning a dedicated fanbase and critical acclaim over the years.

Andre Braugher’s Legacy Celebrated

The late Andre Braugher was posthumously awarded the Career Achievement Award. Known for his memorable roles in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, BoJack Horseman, and Homicide: Life on the Street, Braugher’s contribution to television has been significant and enduring. The award was accepted by his widow, actress Ami Brabson, in an emotional tribute to his legacy.
